Video problems.
Edited on Sat Aug-16-08 09:21 AM by PaulHo
Hi, kind strangers.....

What would be a good move at this point:

1. On IE when I try to access a video... either on DU or Youtube I get this message:

>>>Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player. Get the latest Flash player. >>>>

Apparently the security settings on IE do not allow Adobe Downloads. Can I change the settings? How? If I do will I be inundated with pop-ups and other garbage? ( I *have* to use IE for DU as DU's cookies make Mozilla sick... or the other way around, I forget which. Something about "cookies."

2. I can switch over to Mozilla to see videos but they will not run steadily. In other words they take a million years to fully download ( even short 2 minute clips).

I just updated Mozilla to 3.0 but it make no difference in the video problem. ( I had this issue in the past, and , If I remember correctly, updating Mozilla solved the video problem... although I still couldn't sign into DU, which was OK cause I could sign into DU
on IE.)

Right now I'd just like to use the Political Video forum on DU. Is that so wrrrrooooonnnnnggggg??!!

Many thanks for *any* help.

PaulHo

3. Hey , thanks. I had quite an adventure.
Before you posted that link I tried few other remedies that I found on the web and actually made the problem worse: disabled Adobe Flash Player from Mozilla... where it had been working. So I was effectively blocked on both IE and Mozilla. The videos wouldn't even download.

Followed the directions at your link and was able to restore Adobe Flash on Mozilla...which got me back to square one. Problem is... it still takes forty years for the two minute videoclip to downoad so that I can watch it without repeated pauses every few seconds.

Went to the Youtube help link and found this advice:

>>>It's also possible that your video download speed is slow or inconsistent. In this case, you can try pausing the video until the entire stream is downloaded and then playing the video. Occasionally, an incomplete copy of a video can get stuck in your cache and never fully download. You can re-attempt the download by clearing your browser's cache. You'll find steps on how to do this listed here.>>>>>

I've decide there's a resonable liklihood that this is the problem, having ruled just about everything else out. To complicate matters, I'm going to be away from the PC for four days, so I'm not going to attempt this cache-clearing dealie til I get back. I have a feeling that it's more complicated than it sounds.

Thanks again for your suggestion. I'll let you know whether the cache-clearing solves the slow downloads.
