Free Anti virus software question.
Edited on Sat May-10-08 01:04 PM by RC
I'm running XP pro on a HP7600C/P4.
I need a good replacement for AVG. I tried to load AVG8 on one of my computers this morning and I can not get it to work. It will not install the updates. I've removed, run a registry cleaner, deleted, rolled back, reloaded several times and each time the same thing.
I had AVG Ver 7+ on it when I started and it worked fine.

On the first computer I tried, Ver 8 went in just fine. Not so with the second one however. It seems to install fine. And it goes though the motions. It just won't load the updates. It also wanted to lock up to the point I had to power down to recover.

So What else is on the list of good free anti-virus software? Avast? How does that compare? Anything else that anyone would recommend?

1. the 7.5.524 is the latest free version mine says on it
I just updated it and rebooted. Have you done a complete removal/uninstall? I would do this is you have not - get all of it off your computer (do a search avg and delete all of these files that you might find after the uninstall).

Then download it again and give it another try. Something could have gotten corrupted during the download, hence the reason it won't install properly.

I don't know of any other free AVs myself.
Sorry I wish I could have been of more help to you.

2. I've had the same problem
I just uninstalled and reinstalled 7.5 until they get it fixed.

3. Update on AVG problem.
It doesn't like the firewall turned on during install.
Here's how I got it to work
1. Uninstall AVG 7.5.
2. Reboot
3. Turn off firewall
4. Install AVG 8.0
5. It will then successfully update.
6. Turn firewall back on.
7. Manually update AVG-firewall will ask permission-grant it and everything works fine now.

4. I had similar problems with AVG and switched to Avast
I don't like Avast's user interface. It's not as intuitive as AVG's but it has given me fewer problems than AVG did. I've been running if for a couple of months now and so far so good.

5. AVG 7 was still installed after I installed Ver 8

I download and install Avast. It seems to be working.

But I had to delete AVG by hand. Run a registry cleaner and go back and deleted some more. Going back and forth several times, I finally got it all off. Some files I had trouble deleting. As far as I can tell AVG is now gone.

Anyway everything seem to be working ok.

Thanks for your responses and help.
