Will someone enlighten me as to one of life's great mysteries?
What is the difference between these flavors of cake mixes?

Chocolate
Chocolate fudge
Dark chocolate
Devil's food
etc.

I'm making an ice cream cake roll today. Have not done it for a while and am going to pick up the cake mix shortly. Long ago, I adapted a recipe that saves me a ton of work by using a cake mix instead of making the cake from scratch.

I always stare at the options and am never sure if which is the richest of the chocolate flavors. To make matters more complicated, different manufacturers, different wording.

The recipe is simple and the results are great if you have a nice, rich flavored cake.

Thanks

1. Let's see . . .
chocolate makes my bottom fat, chocolate fudge makes my stomach fat, dark chocolate pads my boobs and devil's food doubles the size of my arms. And I love them all.

3. Ditto, which is why I never make it any more. I have been asked
Edited on Mon Nov-23-09 09:30 AM by Paper Roses
by my kids to bring the ice cream roll for Thanksgiving dessert. They remember it as a treat when they were kids. Never make it for my grandchildren.

I just picked up Duncan Hines Dark Chocolate Fudge.
Will make the roll now, it is better if it sits in the freezer for a couple of days.

Edited to add: I just figured something out. I will eliminate Chocolate Fudge and Dark Chocolate
from my diet. If your assessment is correct, I know what has caused this old body to change shape.
No weight gain, just severe shifts. I knew there must be something to blame it on.

2. If you absolutely must use a mix
try to find a sour cream chocolate cake mix.

The sour cream masks the chemical taste.

4. Very little difference. I use them sometimes...
(since the mixes on sale are cheaper, and more easily found, than cake flour) but add some chocolate chips, cocoa powder, and a little cayenne to make them more "chocolatey" and kill the cloying sweetness.

I'd guess the devil's food to be the best one to start with-- probably a little more chocolatey to start with.

Never forget the spoon test-- if the batter passes that, the cake will be OK.

5. Of those...The dark chocolate IMO would have the most flavor
I'd make the cake with melted butter instead of oil and substitute coffee for the water.

Yum....I love a good ice cream roll. I use to love pumpkin rolls with the cream cheese filling but now with pumpkin ice cream being all over the place a pumpkin ice cream roll sounds great too!
