Black cherries.......
I just got four pounds of the sweetest black cherries at the nearby Harris Teeter. Three bucks a pound.

They are truly yummy.

Summer has officially begun in the LaBamba household....................

1. I've been gorging myself on them too

I've been getting the Yellow Rainiers. They are so huge and juicy this year they just pop in your mouth. I don't even mind spitting the pits. I don't know if you can get them on the East Coast or if they cost a fortune by you but if you see them...This years a great crop.

3. My buddy is bringing me some tomorrow -
his partner got some at Whole Paycheck, I think 6 or 7 bucks a pound, and he said they're so wonderful, I simply have to taste them.

So, yeah, for the right (insane) price, we have them here, but WHO would pay that? I just couldn't bring myself to do it.

I'm really happy with these black cherries, because the past few years, they've been awful, hard and sour and not good. These, oh, I'll just go nuts with them for the next few days.

Happily so ................

4. I paid 6 bucks a pound for some Raniers last week
The red cherries (3 bux a lb everywhere) were really a good bit sweeter. I had gotten some Raniers a few weeks back and they were great ..... and cheaper at 5 bux a pound. Are we past peak for their season?

5. It does seem a little late for them
I haven't been shopping much lately so it was the first I saw them at the green grocer. I haven't seen them at all in the grocery stores here. The red ones are great but just don't hold a candle to the Rainiers IMO. Do a blind taste taste....See for yourselves.

2. Ooooh, yeah
I've got two pounds in the fridge (I thought $2.50/lb was bad), waiting to become a pie tonight (found a great recipe that doesn't even require baking, except for the crust). Every year, I kick myself for not demanding that my mom give me her cherry pitter--until last year, when it finally occurred to me to hit eBay and find one for myself. Best $8 I've spent, even if I only use it six times a year. It's not exactly a rapid-fire process, but a helluva lot better than laboriously pitting with a knife--and as it punches the pits through, you're left with pretty little cherries instead of mangled halves.

I found we're also heading into blueberry season, too--we are going to berry ourselves into a stupor whilst we can!
