Had an amazing Turkish meal tonight!
Edited on Wed Jan-16-08 10:01 PM by supernova
I joined a meetup group for 30ish-40ish single folks. Originally there were 10 of us signed up, but only 1/2 of us showed up. The no shows definitely missed out.

The place was atmospheric with carpets hanging from the walls and turkish lamps hanging everywhere. Shades of maroon, purple, pale yellow and brick red.

We all shared mezzes of lamb/beef dumplings in a yogurt; a spread of tomatoes, eggplant, olives and pine nuts and a little pepper for heat; and veggie fritters served in a kind of tzatziki sauce. :9

I had Tilapia wrapped and cooked in filo and served in a tomato puree laced w/ fresh spinach, :p Washed it all down with a nice Pinot Grigio.

Oh and a kind of dark chocolate not very sweet chocolate pudding and warm fresh walnut baklava for dessert.

:9 :9 :9 :9

Man, I wish I was still there!

*sigh*

1. Except for the lamb balls, it sounds heavenly
Lamb doesn't get along well with my GI tract and I have to avoid it.

The Pinot Grigio was a nice touch. The usual drink is Arrack, kind of like drinking flaming lighter fluid, followed by pots of coffee so strong you can practically stand a spoon in it.

3. Turkish coffee

I have had it before and loved it!

I didn't get it last night because I wasn't into being able to stay up all night running on my treadmill. :P

edit: Arrack, I don't know if it was even on the menu last night. Sounds like moonshine, though.

2. Sounds like a 'splendid' meal
you're lucky to have a circle of people who are interested in sharing a meal like that which is maybe outside the normal fare.

I don't use 'splendid' much but that just seemed to be the word that jumped out at me :)

Your description brought a question to mind, is Turkish cuisine considered part of the Mediterranean range of cuisines? I know it's just an artificial grouping but I was just curious if Turkish diets and cooking practices fall within what most people would include in Mediterranean.

4. It really was 'splendid.'
:-)

The only things missing were the water pipes and the belly dancers. ;-)

Re; Mediteerranean cuisine. I believe so. Turkish and Greek cookery are similar and use a lot of the same ingredients. Although, my knowledge of Turkish cuisine is limited to what I had last night.
