Hip-hop mogul and political activist Russell Simmons is taking his love for animals straight to the city's airwaves and subway cars.

The Def Jam Records founder will lend his celebrity clout to the promotion of a new city hotline that will allow New Yorkers to report incidents of animal cruelty.

The hotline is being launched by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the nonprofit agency charged with enforcing the state's animal cruelty laws.

The society is touting the new number, 877-THE-ASPCA, in an ad blitz that will blanket the subway system with public service announcements. The announcements also will air on TV and radio, and the society plans to distribute posters to all police precincts. If the hotline is successful in New York, it will expand nationwide.

The ads will feature Simmons along with Emi, a 7-year-old black pitbull that was rescued from a dog fighting lot in the South Bronx after the society's law enforcement division received an anonymous tip.

"There is nothing cool about being cruel to animals," Simmons said in a statement. "They have no choice and no voice."
