Pope Benedict names first saints

Pope Benedict XVI has presided over the first saint-making ceremony of his papacy, canonising five people during a mass at the Vatican.
The new saints are a Chilean Jesuit priest, two prelates from Ukraine, and a Capuchin friar and the founder of a holy order - both from Italy.

The Pope's predecessor, John Paul II, made 482 people saints - more than had been canonised in the last 500 years.

Sunday's mass also ended a meeting of the world's bishops, known as a synod.

The synod - the first conducted by Pope Benedict XVI - has been discussing some of the challenges facing the Roman Catholic church, such as the shortage of priests.

from the Third Reich.... Sorry if I offend, as I too was once, but this Pope is a terrible choice. I can't look past all that I tried to do--at least on occasion-- with his predecessor. John Paul had done quite a bit of good in his life, prior to becoming Pope. Even though I vehemently disagreed with him on so many issues, I could still extend some respect.

If Ratzinger has done anything remarkable in his prior life as well, I surely haven't become aware of it. And, yes, I will NEVER refer to him as Benedict. He is Ratzinger.

2. Remarkable or good?
He was the head of the modern inquisition and excommunicated more people than his 3 previous predecessors combined. That's remarkable. Good?...<shrug> I guess it depends on your POV.

I view it in the same way I view Hitler winning Man of the Year from Time in 1936. Noteworthy...The biggest influence then-current events...remarkable? Yes. Good? Not so much.

4. Merely pointing out that remarkable can be remarkably bad.

as is the case in this case.

I had the displeasure of meeting him when I was in college. If you think he's creepy now...stand near him some day, his presence literally chills the air around him like some sort of demonic evil.

5. Gotcha.... You confirmed my impressions...
He sends very creepy and strong impressions to me--even on tv or from his newsprint photos. Something hidden and evil seems to be emoting from him... I'd hoped I was wrong...
