Does it feel, to you, like we're not going to get healthcare reform?
Edited on Sat Jun-06-09 05:40 PM by Shagbark Hickory
I watched the presidents radio address today like I do most saturdays for my routine refill of hope and it was about healthcare. I tried to deciper it. Listening to parts of it again and again.

After watching the address, It appears as though we are not going to get even a public plan.
He put great emphasis on keeping what you got and getting lower costs.

Then I started thinking. Maybe this is the strategy. To make people think there will be no drastic changes in an attempt to rally support from those in our society that are most likely to be swayed by harry & louise adverts.

So if I'm convinced there will be no real changes and you're convinced then maybe this is exactly where we are supposed to be. If the details come out at the last minute and there is a real reform in the details.

Then again maybe not.

1. Looks like the insurance companies have won.
They took an issue and figured out a way to make the government pay them premiums for the same old crappy coverage and problems. It's time for pitchforks and torches.

2. Doesn't mean I'm going to stop yelling.
They pass some piece-of-shit bill and my commentary is going to get even MORE vicious. Watch me.

3. Did he say anything about people who don't have it getting it?
I'm not sure what I think; the people here at DU are pretty smart, so I'm paying attention to opinions here re: health care.

It would really be shocking to me if he failed us on this one. It's the most important issue for a lot of people.

7. He is failing it because he's listening to the insurers and health corporations,
not the doctors and patients.

12. Yep. We were thrown under the bus last Fall or early Winter. You should have seen the
Organize America kick off meeting today in Missoula.

About 5 or 6 paid organizers and maybe 25 citizen volunteers. By far and away margins the volunteers wanted single payer but the organizers kept steering the meeting other places.

Yesterday, there was a single payer rally that was self organized (no paid staff) that had 200+ people at it at 12 noon.

14. I was going to go to one of those meetings tonight, but it was cancelled
because the host had a family emergency. I was armed bear too to argue them down if I had too. Well, they will reschedule, so it gives me even more time to collect more ammo.

15. It won't matter. Most of the volunteers will aready be for single payer. The organizers
won't be.

The whole point is to come up with a "service project" around health care, most likely collect health care stories and share your stories.

You could always suggest helping health insurance agents update their resumes, if you want to be ironic.

The only promising word he said was "choice".

6. I think something is going to come out of Congress with "Health Care" and "Kennedy" on it.
I don't know if people will like it, but I do think that is what will happen.

10. It is. I think we are going to have to get this through states instead.
I have discovered that some states like North Dakota have a state run health insurance that you can buy into instead of Blue Cross and the like. If you can do this or get your employer or union to do it, it might be the beginning of squeezing the insurance companies out of the business. They will go away when there is no more profit to be made.

19. I don't really know the name or that much about it.
Someone mentioned it on the radio and that's the first I heard of it. I don't think we have anything like that in California although there are community clinics that service the poor and homeless through Medicaid.

13. Yep a PR tribute to a fellow member of the club. So what if it means the insurance companies get
richer and we get less health care.

These people have there priorities, and we aren't it.
