Gay Supporters Outnumber Phelps Clan In Flag Protest

Meade, Kansas --- If followers of anti-gay pastor Fred Phelps thought they were going to find support in tiny Meade, Kansas they were mistaken. The militant group demonstrated across the street Sunday from a small hotel that stirred up a local hornets nest when it displayed a rainbow flag.

About 30 of Phelp's followers, mostly relatives, held signs saying "God Hates Fags", and "AIDS is God's curse."

Not far away a crowd nearly double in size help up their own signs. "God Loves Fags" read one sign. "Go home" read another.

I made a promise to myself that I would get all my work done before I allowed myself to play!

The Knights are wonderful. They deserve every good thought we can send to them. They are keeping every email in a book and there are thousands of them. It was great to read.

One of the young men from Meade showed up to stand with us. He had an electronic megaphone and had some interesting back and forth with the Phelps. I think the best line he had all day was to comment on how their signs looked suspiciously like rainbows.

I believe that countering their speech with larger, more effective speech is the best of all possible ways to defeat their hatred.

I don't support attempts to stomp on first amendment rights in the name of suppressing their speech, but I think things like this are scores more effective.

I know when the phelps clan came to our town, and we literally had ten times the number of people countering their protest, it became a huge source of energy and comaraderie amoung those who rallyed to counter their hate. It really went a long way to do some positive things in my town.

As I recall, they were threatening to come to San Francisco earlier this year, but chickened out.

I really wish they'd come here. The news coverage would be massive -- and the more exposure these mental defectives get, the better for us.

Phelps, Robertson, Falwell: The best things to come along for the LGBT movement since Anita Bryant.
