Lugar Won't Filibuster DADT
Edited on Fri Jul-09-10 08:41 AM by davidinalameda
Indiana senator Richard Lugar said last week that he would not join the group of his GOP colleagues who may attempt to rid the defense authorization bill of language that would repeal "don't ask, don't tell."

Lugar told the Washington Blade that he "would just leave as it is" and that he would likely vote against a filibuster.

Stopping or preventing a filibuster against the authorization bill would require 60 votes in the Senate, and a motion to strike the "don't ask, don't tell" repeal language would require 51 votes, the Blade reports.

Senate Armed Services Committee chairman Carl Levin has said he would not be surprised if there were a motion for a filibuster, as top Republican senator John McCain has said he would "do everything" possible to quash a repeal of the law.

1. John McCain Disgusts Me
Edited on Fri Jul-09-10 09:29 AM by jeremyfive
John McCain, child of priviledge who was allowed to play around with multi-million dollar aircraft, up until his failed mission in Viet Nam, left his disabled wife for a stripper on return. After pursuit of a wild lifestyle, he now wants us to believe that he is a "normal guy"--just happens to be married to an heiress and can't recall how many houses he owns. McCain generates loads of sympathy for his torture in VietNam--well, torture is always evil whether practiced by the Cong or Bush-Cheney.

McCain is another spoiled child born with a silver spoon in his mouth, like Dubya. Some rough breaks, but war is hell.

Sometimes it's good to have the right enemies. Thousands of fine American gay patriots should not lose their careers because of the bigotry of the likes of McCain. Certainly, we can call McCain's judgement into question, having dragged Sarah Palin, The Resign-a-Nator and Joe the Tax Cheat onto the national stage.

Gimme a break.

2. The whole idea of filibustering the defense appropriations bill is moronic in the extreme.
This isn't something where they can just play the waiting game. It HAS to be passed within the next 6 months, or else there isn't funding for the military. It's like a child holding their breath until the parent gives them what they want. Moreover, trying to halt military funding, while there's troops in combat zones, to stop something that more than two thirds of Americans support isn't going to look good going into November.
