Gays Being Killed: Rick Warren Doesn't See The Big Deal
OK, we all knew he was a douchebag but even so... From HuffPo (all emphasis mine):

"Meanwhile, on his Twitter page, Warren seemed to question the fuss. "Globally last yr 146,000 Christians were put to death because of their faith. No one, except Christians, said anything," he wrote.

* * * * *

Rick Warren, the pastor who delivered the invocation at President Obama's inauguration, is once again on the defensive -- this time for his work with a Ugandan pastor who would like homosexuality to be punishable by death.

Newsweek tried to get Warren's reaction to the anti-gay work of Martin Ssempa, a Ugandan pastor who has come to his Saddleback Church multiple times. (Warren has distanced himself from Ssempa in general terms, saying the Ugandan minister does not represent him or his church.) Warren wouldn't reject the idea:

But Warren won't go so far as to condemn the legislation itself. A request for a broader reaction to the proposed Ugandan anti-homosexual laws generated this response: "The fundamental dignity of every person, our right to be free, and the freedom to make moral choices are gifts endowed by God, our creator. However, it is not my personal calling as a pastor in America to comment or interfere in the political process of other nations." On Meet the Press this morning, he reiterated this neutral stance in a different context: "As a pastor, my job is to encourage, to support. I never take sides." Warren did say he believed that abortion was "a holocaust." He knows as well as anyone that in a case of great wrong, taking sides is an important thing to do.

Ssempa has also burned condoms "in the name of Jesus," helping roll back a highly successful anti-AIDS campaign in Uganda.

-------------------------------------------------------

I'm pretty sure he's pulling that 146K number from his ample ass. I'm also pretty sure Jesus would have dropkicked this guy.

14. Sorry.
I've been commenting on this story on a few threads in GD. Rick Warren really does worry me. This situation he is tacitly supporting in Uganda has the potential to be explosive and deadly. :(

10. If 146 Christians were put to death for being Christian, it would be
ONE OF THE BIGGEST FUCKING STORIES ON THE PLANET!!

I will bet every red fucking cent to my name this number is as accurate as Lou Dobbs' claim of the "thousands of cases of leprosy, all caused by illegal aliens"!

11. Source that 146K number, little Ricky....
I've seen that figure (give or take) on other sites, but never do they give any specifics.

My guess? Most Christians killed for their beliefs are Missionaries in hostile countries whose citizens are not interested in becoming Christians. Do I condone killing them? Absolutely not. But there's a HUGE difference between being illegally murdered because you are trying to force your religion on someone and writing and passing a law to murder people for doing something that (to them) is as natural as breathing.

16. I seriously doubt that, too.
The last time a missionary was killed it was all over the world papers. 146K? No fucking way. I doubt there are even that many Christian missionaries in existence.

18. Yeah, I didn't really specify that I didn't think that happened terribly often....
I guess my mind was more reeling from his comparison to illegal murder to government mandated murder.

19. True. But he keeps using that figure all over the place and it bugs me.
I've got to find out where he got that.

My guess is that it's total fantasy, or taking unfathomable liberties with data.

22. I've been Googling too.
The only match I can find is to 146,000 Christians living in Israel. But, they are living.

* Statistics indicate that last Christmas, nearly 146,000 Christians lived in Israel, 2.1 percent of her population. Meanwhile, in the PA, the Christian population has been on the decline for years. Currently, Palestinian Christians from the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem comprise less than two percent of the total Palestinian population, less than in Israel! Christians living under the Palestinian Authority have fled in recent years due to economic deterioration and the second intifada. Islamic violence aimed at the dwindling Christian population in the last few months has led to a further population decline.

It's a right wing blog, but I fail to see any claims that these people were killed in the thousands.

12. Make shit up and state it as undisputed fact.
Edited on Wed Dec-02-09 11:27 AM by Deep13
People will believe it if it is coming from a "man of god."

And even if it were true, what does that have to do with a malicious policy of witch-hunting real or falsely-accused homosexuals? Does the murder and intimidation of gay people correct the alleged murder or intimidation of Christians? And don't those two groups overlap? These fucking churchmen will enslave or kill us all if we let them.

15. Obama continues to show he has zero judgement on this topic.
Never thought the democratic underground would still be an underground haven from our great and noble democratic party who seem to know what's best for us even better than we do.
