Just Fucking Let People Vent
As usual I am disappointed at DU and DU'ers deal with any loss that pertains to the Gay community or any marginalized group really.

For the love of god, let people vent. When you lose someone there are stages of grief, its no different than when you lose rights. Let us vent before you start deciding that we should have done more, what the broken strategies were, how obama really could have done nothing more, how mainers are wonderful people really, how we should not even try for marriage etc

For fucks sake.

We just spent Halloween with a gay couple, tricking out their house for the trick-or-treaters and generally having a blast with them.

I'd trust these guys with a marriage license way before I'd trust, say, Heidi and Spencer. Jon and Kate. Todd and Sarah Palin. You get the idea.

9. We needed to have Emma Lazarus crisscrossing Maine, speechifying: Give me your ignorant, ....
..... your superstitious, the easily led and morally corrupt pressing at the altars of your dying church. Enrage them with lies, and threaten their children. Let Mormons teach decent people how to be racist, sexist, and homophobic. Lie down in a bed full of strangers whose enemy is your enemy, and you are theirs. You morons can win this! You immoral Christians, Muslims, Jews and the inexplicably motivated Atheists amongst you. Bond with the potheads who are turning out to legalize "medical" marijuana, and vote against the rights of American citizens. Oppress or die!

13. Vent away! You have reason, and my sympathy & support
I remember when Hillary finally conceded, there were so many people telling her supporters to stop crying and get behind Obama that it really turned me off. Even though I was an Obama supporter. People need to grieve properly before they move on, and respecting that is only right and just and decent.

24. Well, you have more than just GLBT people on your side
but I think for most of them, GLBT rights are something that are a "good thing" not an "urgent" thing. As a happily married hetero woman, I have to admit that it isn't the battle I wake up to fight, nor the one I can't sleep for worrying about. Yes, it's something I care about, and support with my money and time (at least, sometimes!) but I know my interest lacks the urgency that it has for GLBT folks. It shouldn't be so - as someone here has noted, rights denied to any one of us affects all of us, if only because it sets a precedent - but it is so.

I don't know how to fix that. I'm not sure it *can* be fixed - I think it's human nature to focus more closely on threats that affect us directly, than on threats that affect us indirectly. All we "allied supporters" can do is recognize that tendency, and work to overcome it.

47. I've been 'venting' (offline) and I'm a heterosexual married person who phonebanked for
NO On 1 and cannot BELIEVE that 30K+ Maine voters think that all their fellow citizens should have access to medical marijuana but NOT to marriage!

I cried a lot yesterday. How CAN people be so filled with hate? Especially the ones who CLAIM to be 'Christian'??

Please know, I will always be on your side and ready for a fight!

I wish more of your fellow Maine voters had the sense to agree with you, and us. :(

A lot of church's pushed against us on this, and pushed their congregations to vote against us. But we are getting a lot of people telling us that we should not judge churches or Christianity for this. Like it or not, they ARE christians. That IS christianity. You are the exception, not the rule.

65. Actually, I'm in VA. I did phone-banking from home thru the Courage Campaign's
'Protect Maine Equality' effort.

I am still sick and ashamed that my own state of VA has discrimination written into our Constitution. And now we have an American Taliban governor, so prospects look bleak here for at least another 4 years. x(

Nonsense like "I'm a Christian therefore _______ (insert hateful, bigoted position here)" is one of the many reasons I left religion behind long ago. I do respect that some people derive comfort and even a truly moral way of being from their faith, but I just can't get past all the evil that has been done in the name of 'God'.

I am truly sorry. This is sad for all of us, straight and GLBT. Anytime one person's rights are denied, we all suffer.

I wish there was something I could say to make you feel better, but other than offering my heartfelt sympathy, I know nothing would suffice.

Hang in there and we'll all keep fighting together. Sooner or later, we'll out number the neanderthals.

I understand the feelings of grief.

Now, it's happened again, and I'm so sad.

Hugs to those who fought against the passage of this monstrosity in Maine.

My nephew, who is gay, is heartbroken. Though he doesn't have anyone special in his life, we want to know that when the time comes and he finds his soul mate he can exchange MARRIAGE vows with the man who he will love for a lifetime. That's all. He just wants a fundamental human right and I feel almost powerless in the face of each defeat of such legislation.

say. Truth. The actual nature of those posters is there for all to see. Let it stand for them, let them define the politicians they adore with their bigotry and arrogance. Let it stand as witness to the utter amorality of the faith touted by so many of those sniping hypocrites. Let their words be seen, remembered, let their words define them and all that they stand for. Let the joy they take in the suffering of others be a calling card for the wind of karma.

And the real fight is challenging the majority voting to take away the civil rights of another.

This should not be allowed, and I believe it runs afoul to everything our country stands for.

And we GLBT folk have experienced setbacks before, but we emerge stronger and will continue to make progress.

We will never back down. Never.

52. Civil rights should never be up for a vote. I'm hoping that WA state will make history
this week, and be the first state to ever approve civil partnerships by a vote of the people. But that still leaves it open to being UN-done by a vote.

I saw Angels in America recently, and it reminded me of how far we've come. And yet there is still so far to go. . .
