Tori Amos slams gay marriage ban (Prop 8)
http://www.abc2news.com/entertainment/story/Amos-slams-gay-marriage-ban/_9oXZPzmmE6aLn3NJzwLsA.cspx

Tori Amos has blasted voters who pushed through a gay marriage ban in California - because it goes against the teachings of Martin Luther King, Jr.

The God hitmaker, whose father is a Methodist minister, insists outlawing same-sex unions is un-Christian and a breach of civil rights.

And she is confused Californian voters passed the Proposition 8 bill - which reversed a previous ruling permitting gay marriage in the state - on the same day Barack Obama was elected U.S. President last year.

She tells Attitude magazine, "(I was) extremely disappointed. Well, we go back to this concept of emancipation. The idea of 'We will overcome' from the great Dr. Martin Luther King, was made flesh as Obama was put into the office and yet at the same time another group of people were subjugated by some of those voters.

"A lot of people were saying, 'Well you have to understand that a lot of the voters are Democratic and Christians, the ones that had an issue with rights for the gay community'. And I would say how, in any way, is that the Christian path?"

I've always loved Tori - she's just announced a tour too - now Im going to have to go:)

1. She should tell her father. He's a minister in a denomination that opposes
marriage equality, and considers being gay "incompatible with the practice of the Christian faith."

2. There are still some really supportive Methodist churches.

It could be worse: I'm recovering LCMS. After being told at my grandfather's funeral that if I took communion the pastor would push for my official excommunication, I walked away and haven't looked back.

3. I'm sorry to hear you were treated that way.
But, honestly, given the hateful language in the UMC Book of Discipline concerning GLBT people, I simply don't understand why any such people, or allies, are still in the UMC.

4. The UMC will come around
There's no hope for the LCMS--it's like the Lutheran Church for Bigots!

8. I'm not convinced the UMC will come around. There were Methodists
who split the church rather than speak against slavery. Some feel the same way about glbt issues.

5. In my UMC, members wear rainbow crosses.
There is a sign in the narthex explaining our church's open embrace of all GLBT congregants:

As congregants of the First United Methodist Church of (where I live), we welcome and affirm
all persons. We are intentional in being inclusive of those of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and
transgender orientations, all genders, ethnicities, nationalities, and abilities. In modeling the
ministry of Jesus Christ, we shall all journey together into full participation in the life
of the United Methodist Church and a closer relationship with God.

I spoke with my minister about the "official" Methodist ridiculous BS stance. He said there was a big fear that if issues were pushed too hard at the General Conference that it would result in a split like the Episcopal church, but that he wouldn't be surprised if it came to a head soon anyway. Nationally, reconciling communities include 221 reconciling congregations, 28 campus ministries, 34 communities/ministries and 18,000+ individuals. (A reconciling congregation welcomes all persons, specifically including GLBT persons through a public statement of affirmation.)

7. So, you ignore the official position of the United Methodist Church
which is “We do not condone the practice of homosexuality and consider this practice incompatible with Christian teaching.”

You belong to an institution which openly discriminates against glbt people. Won't marry them, won't ordain them. You can wear all the rainbows you want, but every time you drop money in the offering plate, you support homophobia.

I really think the United Methodist Church needs to be called on its BS slogan. There are no "open doors" in an organization whose official position is one of hatred.

9. Listen, critters. I like you.
But I really do not appreciate your aggressive language.

Call me a log cabin Methodist, if that is what you're implying. But I feel welcome in my church. My church makes a huge effort to take a stand against the Book of Discipline on this matter.

10. I've been totally gaga for her since 92
If I'd had to guess, I would have said she'd be against the stupid ban.
