Kalamazoo City Council Rescinds Anti-Discrimination Ordinance, Vows To Try Again In February
Jim Burroway
January 13th, 2009
We were very excited last month to learn that the Kalamazoo, Michigan, city commission voted unanimously to expand their anti-discrimination ordinance to include sexual orientation. But right away, the American Family Association of Michigan responded by announcing an effort to repeal the entire ordinance.

Well, last night after the AFA Michigan submitted petitions with 1,600 signatures, the commission voted 7-0 to rescind the law rather than have it go before the voters. Commissioner Stephanie Minor said, “We knew it would be rescinded on the basis that we were going to come back, reconvene, look at the ordinance and strengthen it, clarify it, and bring it back before the commission to bring it back.” The commission hopes to have a retooled ordinance back for a vote in February. Stay tuned.

1. I don't understand this sentence:
“We knew it would be rescinded on the basis that we were going to come back, reconvene, look at the ordinance and strengthen it, clarify it, and bring it back before the commission to bring it back.”

What is she trying to say there?

that they knew it would be rescinded, because, I read about this on Box turtle the other night, that they knew it would be rescinded because the AFA had a petition to stop the ordinance and they either already had enough haters sigs, or were close.

So, knowing that the AFA was meddling with this ordnance and it would probably be thrown out, they learned from their mistake and will reword it to make it stronger and AFA proof.

BTW- another, freaking example of the douches voting away the rights of their fellow citizens. Or in this case, protection for their fellows.

The anti gay forces have latched on to this idea of petitions, propositions and they now apply it to human rights issues with a smug vengeance. :grr:

3. Just watching about this new film Defiance, about the Holocaust
and talking with a friend about how bigotry and hatred seem like abstractions to those who have never personally felt it.

Proposition8 perhaps was an opportunity, in that it brought hatred for being who we are as gay human beings into focus in a truly different way.

It was organized, it was powerful, it was institutional, it played on fear and used propaganda to actually take away human rights granted by law.

The implications of such power and it's ultimate misuse has been borne out by history.

It is to be remembered, resisted, fought and called by name out loud so those who perpetrate such hate can never hide. Not even in little Kalamazoo Michigan.
