The Red Burka for A Red America
Check out the Red Burka for A Red America (graphic) and tell the world what you think about the relentless, never-ending, Republican-led and State-financed War on Women.

I plan to wear a Red Burka Shirt when I go downtown to watch my elected representatives vote on whether or not women should be returned to the 19th century when the male-dominated state had the unmitigated audacity to rob women of their personhood.

The women of America have not forgotten that for most of our nation's history we were denied the most basic of citizenship rights. We have not forgotten that we were once property!

We have not forgotten and we will not go back!

2. The Women of America
Should remember that other women are betraying them, and most have R's by their names or call themselves conservatives.

Ann Coulter, Lynn Cheney, Laura Bush, just to name of few. It is these women and others that think like them who are the greatest enemies of American women, not just the men.

4. Too true...

the assault is coming from both sexes on the conservative side, sadly. For example, let us not forget this crazy bitch as referenced in last week's Idiots:

Commenting on illegal immigration, (Georgia's 50th District Senator Nancy) Schaefer said 50 million abortions have been performed in this country, causing a shortage of cheap American labor. “We could have used those people,” she said.

Unbe-fucking-lievable.

Excellent idea, Egalia. I'm with you, and I'm definitely picking up one of those T-shirts. And by the way, love your name. :-)

9. thank you
LilyLibber.

Yeah, the wingnuts come in all sexes, but I still believe that if this was a female dominated state, we'd be talking about regulating Viagra, not abortion.

3. Wow, they ought to actually MAKE those!
Imagine a whole passle of women, decked out in lurid red burkahs, perhaps emblazoned with a big W with a slash through it on the forehead! Talk about street theatre!

12. Red is for handmaids
in Margaret Atwood's novel. I like the Handmaid's Tale tie-in as well. Perhaps a few of those costumes as shown on the book cover with the white caps with wings to cut off peripheral vision.

8. I wonder if Simplicity has a pattern
My mom used to sew a lot and I remember those patterns neatly put away in drawers. Simplicity had a pattern for just about anything.:)

13. I think this is a poignant and beautiful idea --
it also brings the ideas of sisterhood and international solidarity into play -- we may be a little better off than women in other parts of the world, but we are ALL still facing challenges simply bc of our gender, and we need to fight against that for as long as it takes, for as long as we are being discriminated against in ANY way whatsoever.

Sign me up for one of those burkas baby!

5. Google answers on "burqa" (also spelled burqua, burka, burcka)
Edited on Mon Mar-27-06 03:07 PM by crikkett
http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=2603

The “burqa” (also spelled burqua, burka, burcka) has been a recent
controversial topic in world news. Islamic women in Afghanistan were required
to wear the head-to-toe shroud under the 1996 Taliban fatwa (or decree).

Burqas come in many different styles (lengths and colors) and materials
(georgette, cotton, polyester) but all share the common goal to cover all but
the eyes of the face. Inside, a mesh-like embroidery drapes the face.

There are a number of online stores that will accommodate your request. If you
order one from outside the United States, be sure to use a credit card. If the
shipment gets lost, your credit card (depending on their policy) might cover
the costs.

As mgriffiths has stated (See comments below) Muttaquan Bookstore has full-
length burqas for sale, ranging in size (5’0-6’0), color (black, cream, brown,
green), and price ($80-$90).

on edit: forgot to mention suppliers are listed at the link...
