Atheists Helping the Homeless completes its 31st giveaway, begins charter groups
http://www.atheistshelpingthehomeless.org/AHTH2/AHTH/index.php

October 17, 2011

Since September 2009, atheist volunteers in Texas have been gathering on Sundays at 7th Street and the I-35 freeway in downtown Austin to help the homeless. The location is a popular place, where a number of church groups also give food, clothing and aid, but their help is accompanied with preaching and religious music.

Atheists Helping the Homeless provides a secular approach and fills a need that has not been adequately met by providing toiletries and other non-perishable items.

On Sunday, the group finished its 31st giveaway. They say that they have helped over 1,500 homeless people so far.

Atheists Helping the Homeless is now forming chapter groups outside of the Austin area. 100% of donations — whether in cash or in product — goes toward helping those in need.

Kudos.

7. They could always take the Biblical perspective on it
2 Thessalonians 3:10

2. But the poor have to listen to a sermon about No-God first.
....and we make them take money out of the offering plate.

12. The lack of sermon being the wordless sermon itself.
Good on these atheists for doing this.

I still say that as they organize, someday they shall acquire the same problems organized religion encounters today.

13. Or maybe, as the world recognizes that religion and belief aren't required for anything,
we'll move to a more religiously apathetic society like some European countries already have.

Same stuff that religions today must survive now.

Bethany Christian Trust supports 4,000 homeless and vulnerable people every year in Scotland

Last I knew, Texas is big, but Scotland is NOT in Texas!

All other searches on that term did NOT return anything having to do with homelessness, more about pregnancy, etc.

OH, but there was THIS:

"Lust for Black Gold
Estate of Tulsa Oilman E. F. Blaise Left in Religious Trusts; Brain Disabled Grandson, Abandoned by Dad, Dies Homeless; Widow Marie Blaise Charged With Extreme Child Cruelty."

Which work is that? Feeding the masses with miraculous bread and fish, or genocide and damnation? It kinda seems like he's into both from the book I was given.

31. As I figured.
1) It's not "god's work." It is humanity's work. Your god is doing nothing.

2) "must be first time ever" - Way to hold non-believers in such low esteem that you assume they've never done any charitable act.

Religious bigotry is an ugly, ugly thing.

36. I don't blame God, as I don't believe in him
I just find it absurd and condescending that people call it "God's work" to help the needy even when it's done by those who clearly don't believe in gods. It stems from that bullshit view that anything good is from/for God and everything bad is by humans/Satan.
