Police: "Too westernized" Teen Run Down By Dad Dies

PEORIA, Ariz. -- A teenager who police say was run over by her father on Oct. 20 has died, authorities said.

Almaleki and her boyfriend’s mother were walking across a Peoria parking lot when they were struck, officers said.

The girl’s father, Faleh Almaleki, an Iraqi immigrant, was returned to Arizona Saturday to face aggravated assault charges.

Police said the Almalekis moved to Peoria from Iraq in the mid-1990s.

Family members said Noor Almaleki had been living with her boyfriend and Khalaf, and Faleh Almaleki was upset that his daughter had become too "Westernized," had failed to live by traditional Muslim values and had disrespected the family.

Iraq was a secular nation, women had a lot of freedom and protection.

Now they don't. Now Muslim fundamentalists are in power, now women have to wear head coverings and traditional garb, watch their movements. Women made up a good percentage of professionals but now women who are doctors, lawyers, professors and so on are threatened and targeted. They were too often assasinated as a lesson. Higher education is way down...

There have been many studies, articles and books about the changed role of women.
I recall an article from early in the war when some of our soldiers were watching a woman being harassed for not wearing head dress and being dragged away. A female translator asked them why they didn't help the woman and they explained they weren't allowed to interfere with the customs of the country. She tried explaining it was not their custom and what the situation was...but to no avail.

Saddam was a bastard for sure and if you were his target it could be bad...
but it is bad for all women now. Besides loss of freedom and choice rape and other forms of violence against women are way up.

It is happening now in Iraq but it wasn't happening in the many years before our invasion. Women were 'westernized' there as far as not having to wear head coverings, wore 'western' clothes, were a big percentage of college graduates and professionals, having pretty progressive marriage and divorce laws, many rights.

That is not the case now. Religious extremists have stopped all that.

It's true Christians rarely have 'honor killings' but if our laws and government were suddenly gone and right wing fundamentalist "Christians" grabbed power... do you think they'd be all that sane in how they treated 'rebellious women'.

Too many Muslim countries have given their extremists too much power so we hear the bad things that happen. That is more a problem of religious extremists having power, setting the rules and laws... than it is what religion the extremists in power belong to.

Honor killings are not restricted to Islam, but that is the culture in which they are most common and prominent.

Some Middle East countries have honor killing in their law.

In Syria it is perfectly legal to kill a female family member caught having sex outside of marriage. You can kill her sex partner, too.

Same in Jordan for adultery.

Other countries usually look the other way.

A murder will rarely be prosecuted in Pakistan if a man says it was for his honor.

Immigrants to this country should be required to take classes in American culture which should include applicable laws. So, for example, they'll be taught that so-called "honor killings" of family members are considered murder in this country and will be punished as such.
