What justification does a question require?
Edited on Mon Dec-01-08 02:58 PM by Boojatta
For example, suppose that a company in China were to sell wholesale, to some retail shops in Iran, some posters or T-shirts showing a Chinese translation of "Does God Exist?", perhaps with some graphic designs in addition to those words, but no other words. Presumably, some people in Iran would eventually discover the meaning. Would any of them demand justification? For example, might some customs agents, store customers, or store managers in Iran say that the answer is obviously "yes" and that one needs justification for asking a question that has such an obvious answer?

2. I presume that "1+1 = 2" can be understood by monolingual speakers of Chinese...
Edited on Mon Dec-01-08 03:53 PM by Boojatta
but I thought that someone would need to translate "Does God Exist?" to Chinese characters in order for monolingual speakers of a Chinese dialect to be able to read and understand it.

Alternatively, someone in China might think of the idea and express it in Chinese from the beginning. The result would be identical to a Chinese translation of "Does God Exist?", but it would not have actually been translated because it would not have been initially written in English.

4. 'someone in China might think of the idea
and express it in Chinese from the beginning'

the concept, i'm sure, had been conceived long before, and by a multitude of cultures in their native tongue, before the english language as you know it was ever uttered.

thus, no translation necessary.

3. could you translate your post
into English. I know you are using words common in the English language, but somehow they don't seem to have any coherence.
Do questions need justification in Iran? Is that the point of your post. Plain English would help.

5. Sometimes I feel like there was a secret meeting that I was not invited to.
At this meeting, some DUers decided to pick someone at random and claim that they make no sense, no matter how simple their post may be. They chose Boojatta. Boojatta could copy and paste someone else's post, any post, and people would claim to be confused.

Other actions taken at this meeting included, but were not limited to...

Replacing all of the working pens in my house with pens that only write for one to five letters.

Ordering takeout.

Pushing strangers.

Discussing insidious tic-tac-toe strategies.

Scratching all of my Man, or Astroman CDs.

Planting evidence that horses were in North America during the time of Christ.

8. OK
First Boojatta describes the following situation:

A person in China creates a poster or T-shirt. This poster or T-shirt says; "Does God Exist?", in Chinese. The Chinese creator then sells the posters or T-shirts to a store in Iran. Eventually, an Iranian figures out the meaning of the Chinese text on the poster or T-shirt.

Boojatta then asks the following question:

Would some of the Iranians demand a justification for asking; "Does God Exist?" Why would the Chinese creator of those posters or T-shirts ask that question?

Boojatta's subject line now comes into play:

"What justification does a question require?" Do we need to give a reason for asking a particular question?

Zombiehordes interpretation of Boojatta's OP:

I have seen some people question the ulterior motive behind some of Boojatta's posts and polls. A small number of posters have asked Boojatta to justify the questions proposed in his or her posts and polls. They did not use that wording, but that was the feeling that I got when I read them. At least, this is what I thought when I first read the OP of this thread. Of course, Boojatta could have been thinking of something else entirely.

7. None at all.
The question posed sounds more like a statement than an interrogatory. The message would simply be an invitation to reflect on one's own understanding. A challenge, so to speak. I don't think the question would require justification being as how it's one of the basic queries of all religions.
