Can someone help me understand my visceral negative reaction to Justin Bieber?

He's just a kid and I don't think I'm an old crank. So why is it that everytime I see him pictured on yet another entertainment story involving him, I develop such a strongly negative reaction... He's hardly the first teen idol to dramatically emerge on the scene (only to disappear almost as dramatically some time later). So, what is it about this kid that bugs me so much?

1. Teenybopper gods are supposed to annoy the hell out of adults
Face it, that's part of their allure. He's no worse than Britney and her slutwear or the manufactured idols of my preteen years like Fabian with their greasy hair and sneers.

Few of them survive as adult stars, so relax, he'll go away soon and be replaced by somebody equally annoying while he looks forward to either oblivion or a career doing a lounge act in Vegas.

2. I consider him a product.
So he gets the typical "meh" non-reaction from me. Like you said, this happens in our culture and it will probably always be that way.

Edited on Sat Aug-21-10 04:36 PM by hlthe2b
at least originally... I think it has something to do with his coiff.... but then when I imagine him with a crewcut, dredlocks, or even bald, I am still annoyed at the thought! LOL

7. AFAIK, I haven't heard a single note produced by this youngster
but the concept of children being packaged as commodities for mass consumption is troubling to me on a visceral level as well. It's also possible that other 'Lou Pearlmans' are waiting in the wings to molest these children under the guise of 'career management.'

9. I's because he's androgynous.
If his hair was a little longer, he'd make a beautiful little girl.

10. hmm when a young Michael Jackson was like this he was considered fabulous and Bieber CAN sing
without auto tune just fine, tho he doesn't seem to have MJ dance ability.

16. Actually he was using auto tune on the youtube I saw...
one of several that seems to be pairing him with people like Ludacris and Usher, which makes him seem even more contrived.... The latter, actually included quite a bit of auto tune, btw. He appears 8 years old....so, I'm just not seeing what is making him the "it" kid. Maybe, you could link to something more reflective of his singing abilities?

11. Justin Bieber annoys the hell out of me, too.

He's 2010's Donny Osmond.

First, the hairdo (hair don't) is ridiculous. It's silly, comical looking.

He can't really sing all that well.

He isn't cute unless you consider him "cute" like the AMC Pacer was a "cute" car.

There's really no reason for him to be a celebrity, but he is.

(At least Donny Osmond grew up and did something with his life, I've heard he's been quite good on Broadway and in other shows that he's done. At least he has talent.)

15. Whenever I see a person become famous
before their work becomes famous, I have an immediate negative reaction to them. I can't name a song he sings but I know if I flip through all my channels, I can see him, or a discussion of him.

I know I shouldn't laugh but damn, that was funny... "Ow! That didn't feel good... I don't know why she just threw that at me, cause I love you guys!" (yeah, I'm going to hell)

I know I should feel sorry for the kid because he doesn't even know how irritatingly "precious" he is being, but it is so much like the obnoxious friends (ya know we all have them)--who can't stop talking about their kids and force you to be "treated" to hours listening to the most precocious of them... You find their child to be extremely irritating and more narcissistic than talented, but are forced to sit there and converse with this "40 year old wannabee" six year old as though they were your peer. Uggh.

Not to compare JB to the Fab 4, but the hysteria's the same, and there is a hairstyle to go with it. Plus, you don't sound like you're a teen aged girl. ;)
The ubiquitous use of auto-tune is the biggest factor for me. I don't know if he can sing, but I knew the Beatles could.
