Writer, Professor, Reynolds Price dies.

DURHAM -- Reynolds Price, a writer who taught more than 50 years at Duke University, died Thursday afternoon. He was 77.

Price, the James B. Duke Professor of English, had a major heart attack early Sunday, according to a press release from Duke.

“With a poet’s deep appreciation for language, Reynolds Price taught generations of students to understand and love literature,” said Duke President Richard H. Brodhead in a statement. “Reynolds was a part of the soul of Duke. He loved this university and always wanted to make it better."

Price was a native of Macon, N.C., and graduated from Duke in 1955, the release stated. At Duke, he studied creative writing under professor William Blackburn, whose other Duke students included noted authors William Styron ’47 and Anne Tyler ’61.

His writing is beautiful, esp. Roxanna Slade and The Tongues of Angels. I also liked Blue Calhoun and Kate Vaiden.

1. The Surface of Earth is my favorite
A Long and Happy Life is wonderful, too. He's well loved in North Carolina especially. Loved hearing his voice on public radio.

2. Yes, I lived in NC for 25 years, which is how I came to be introduced
to his work. Also a big fan of his on NPR.

4. They played an interview from 2006
on Fresh Air on NPR yesterday. He was truly fascinating to listen to. I sat in my car when I got to the grocery store so I could finish listening to it before I went in to shop.

5. I was so sorry to read this, and also sorry that I have read
very little of his work. I promptly went to order some! I think a friend of mine who went to Duke back in the day had some classes with him.
