Charles Powell Jr., chairman of the East St. Louis Central Democratic Committee, is expected to appear before a federal grand jury this morning in an investigation involving possible vote fraud during the Nov. 2 election.
Powell, who also sits on the East St. Louis City Council, is one of several prominent Democrats subpoenaed this week in the inquiry. He said Wednesday he did not know the investigation's scope and declined to comment on it, other than to acknowledge receiving a subpoena.
One source said 15 people have been told to appear or bring records to the grand jury in East St. Louis.
James Lewis, head of the East St. Louis Board of Election Commissioners also was asked to provide records. He could not be reached for comment Wednesday, but an attorney said Lewis was not a target of the investigation.
