Let's support Guv's e-book thread in GD!
Btw, I'm reading a history of El Salvador, where my family is from. Last night I read how political unrest settled down in the early 20th Cent when they began staging fake elections. The appearance of democracy produced the consent of the "voters".

We Do Not Consent

2. Go, GuvWorld! He's got the right idea of how to approach election
Edited on Fri Mar-24-06 01:53 PM by Peace Patriot
reform--first of all, that the point of elections--the bottom line of our democracy--is to seek and obtain the consent of the governed, and second, that the only way to do this--to achieve the consent of ALL--is through TRANSPARENT, VERIFIABLE elections. There should be no doubt about who won, no non-transparency, no "trade secret" programming code for vote tabulation, no inability to do a recount (as with no paper trail), no partisan vendors, and no behind-the-scenes or "black box" doings whatsoever.

He suggests a bipartisan approach through county government and local election officials--and I believe he is exactly right, since these are the closest levels of government to the people.

We should also keep in mind that it is very likely that many Republican votes for Kerry were stolen and given to Bush in the 2004 election, by these Bushite-controlled, major Bush donor voting machine corporations (mainly Diebold and ES&S). We may feel partisan about it, because Democrats take the biggest hits of stolen votes with these machines; but it truly is a non-partisan issue. These Bush-friendly voting machine corporations are preventing Republicans from changing THEIR party--as well as preventing Democrats from driving the warmongers and corporate shills out of ours, and electing candidates who truly represent the people of the this country.

Hey, sfexpat2000! Can you give us a rundown on the political situation in El Salvador today, in view of the leftist revolution that is sweeping South America (and likely moving north into Mexico this year)? I would be most interested to know what is going on there now--after the horrors of the Nixon-Reagan era. It should be separate thread, I think. (I can't read Spanish--so my Latin sources are limited to sites like www.venezuelanalysis.com, which write in English or do good English translations.) PM me if/when you do.

14. The Sheer Incompetence of Diebold's Programmers Gives Us Our Only Opening
If Diebold had competent programmers, they'd have it all locked-down by now,
and we'd have no hope of restoring our democracy.

It is only because they can't seem to prevent the machines from CRASHING
in mid-election, that we have been able to decertify them in some places.

5. Last Chance To Have Your Name Included In the Book
It's not like you'd be signing the Declaration of Independence or anything but We Do Not Consent will include the paper I wrote last summer called Blueprint For Peaceful Revolution.

I've got about another 15 minutes for anyone who wants to be recognized as an endorser of the Voter Confidence Resolution. Use this link: http://tinyurl.com/q7r53

published on Mon in the SF Chron. I ripped off your "no confidence" formulation and autorank's ham sandwich:

Editor,

The problem with electronic voting is not perception but opacity. Californians have no reason to have confidence in election results when our votes are counted in secret on machines that use hackable software and when it is nearly impossible to recount them.

Even our San Francisco systems are not secure. Our ballots are scanned into tabulators that are not adding machines but computers which also use hackable software. They have memories that you can walk around with like a CD player or a ham sandwich. Hamas uses a more secure election system than we do.

Canada uses hand counted paper ballots which are far less expensive, and their elections aren't plagued by "glitches" that delay results and produce results that voters can trust. We should, too.
