Can a Liberal Democrat win in 2005?
Great article from the Guardian!
http://politics.guardian.co.uk/election/story/0,15803,1454436,00.html

I didn't see any specific DU forum for 2005...and this is a good one if you don't like to spend too much time lookin' back. There's not a whole lot you can do to change the past...you can only change it's interpretation...and interpretations of the 2004 election don't even seem to make as much difference as (mis)interpretations of 9/11.

1. Considering FDR and the rest of the "Liberal Democrats" are dead...
...no.

Now on the other hand, I think the ONLY Democrat who can win at all is a Progressive Democrat.

3. Well, I totally agree with you guys.
And I hope we can improve the voting systems in many states of the USA in the next few years. But the British upcoming elections may help us to understand what the real possibilities are now.

By the way, election fraud is an issue over there to:

They had to count them all"

8. You let me know when a liberal Democrat actually runs!
Because from where I stand, I have never seen an actual liberal get the party nomination...ever, in my lifetime.

It is so sad to me that people think Gore and Kerry were liberals.

9. what's your definition of a liberal Democrat then?
If Gore and Kerry weren't liberals, your definition must be pretty narrow...

10. Not really...
Jerry Brown and Dennis Kucinich were liberals. Both didn't sell out their liberal ideals and principals for increased votes. Both Gore and Kerry did.

Gore seems to be coming back around to his liberal roots these days...but then, he isn't running for anything. Kerry never did look like a liberal to me...he was just painted with that label by the right.

11. Kucinich was a liberal?
Where does being an anti-abortionist fit into the liberal credo? Maybe that's a legit position by your definition, since he certainly wasn't selling out his conservative ideals on abortion to get votes. On the other hand, he did a 180 on that when he decided to run for president, so maybe he was...

Gore's roots are conservative, not liberal, btw. Check out his voting record in the Senate. While your at it, you might check out Kerry's voting record - there's a reason ACT ranks him, over the last 20 years, as one of the most liberal members of the Senate.

The Republicans painted Kerry as a liberal because he is. By any reasonable definition.

6. New Jersey and Virginia.
At least I think those are the only two. Might be a special election somewhere.
