KOEB (Wednesday)
Edited on Wed Feb-23-05 07:57 PM by SharonRB
I know I'm early, but I'm bored. Anyone out there?

Couldn't resist. I read yesterday's thread at work today, since I missed and thought this was a hoot! I saw the show, but I was getting my tax stuff together while I watched.
:loveya:

Thanks for putting the KO Snarkman pic in the OP. I made it yesterday, isn't it hilarious? Well, gotta run. I'm tutoring the next door neighbor's kid.

Have fun ladies and gents.

Red tie and black suit, yummy!

36. It was Miami Liberal that came up with the KO-customized Super Suit
Ain't it great???

Someone else came up with the initial photo without the tie, but ML added that crowning touch. Which reminds me:

To the Ties That Bind!!!

:toast:
And good evening everybody!

I think the regular time is 8 on Tuesdays and 9 on Weds for the results shows. But next week, I think, is the same as this week. M/T @ 8 and Weds at 9. I think Nadia's gonna kick some ass!

January 19, 1977: Snow in Miami, Miami Beach, and Homestead, FL.

You should have seen the size of the headline on The Miami Herald!

I had to go fetch hubby: car is not well. I was about 15 minutes late, and then the computer gave me some trouble. Sometimes I think computers should come with a "special place" to kick. :)

But I WILL tell ya that husband said the other night, "I can't watch news at all anymore, except Keith Olbermann." I reckon I married good, even if it took me 35 years to realize it.

Rev, the point of the glasses, I think, is to be able to pull them off in the heat of passion.

193. I suggested a DU Group in yesterday's thread - there were no big NO's
I think it's a good idea:

1. We can concentrate more on the show during the live-blog time. This would both increase the information content for those of us without cable and also reduce the number of posts, which is what Skinner says is the major slow-down factor for big threads.

2. We can post at other times without dealing with a long thread or a thread that is hard to find. It would be started in our Group Forum, presumbly within the 2004 Elections Forum, so we could check there whenever we wanted and find each other.

3. We can start threads that are not so directly related to only the topics raised on KO's show but are important to us, or expand on subjects that he touches on in one or two shows but are not mentioned otherwise. After all, much of his show is on topics that don't need discussion -- but some of them do beyond the time given on his show.

4. Our live-blog thread could be more accessible and probably shorter (and easier/faster to load as a result), so might be less intimidating for people who would like to join us but get lost in the long thread and many inside jokes.

I think we should do it. By the rules, we would need 10 donating members to request a new group plus a mission statement that would pass muster. I think we would also want to ask permission from representative(s) of the Election 2004 Forum, like UnderstandingLife.

What do you think?

218. Hello Patsy! So let's do the following tomorrow night
Let's have a post near the beginning of tomorrow night's KOEB thread about starting a new Group -- we need 10 donating members and a mission statement. Maybe several of us can come up with draft mission statements and suggest them then. That way we can amalgamate the most important parts into a Grand Unified KOEB Mission Statement (up to now we've gotten by fine with just our official toast!).

If UnderstandingLife drops by, we can ask his opinion about the formation of this new Group in the Elections 2004 forum; if he doesn't, we can PM him about it. If anyone else can think of someone else we should ask, they can mention them.

We may be able to get our 10 donating members right there in the thread, responding to the initial suggestion. If not, we may need to do it again to collect additional supporters.

How does this sound? I'm afraid relatively few KOEBers may see it here, so we may need to PM some people tomorrow before the Meeting.

221. That's good. I'll start putting together some ideas.
I suggest a brainstorming session. Let's set up a thread in the Media Forum (they discuss KO over there sometimes) and send the link via PM to the regulars. We can work on a mission statement over there and we don't have to keep kicking this thread. Whaddya think? I can do it now, if you'd like, and I'll post it here also.

234. Sounds good. Crispini raised important points in her post
I checked, and she's right -- only members with the star can post in Groups. I don't recall if any KOEB regulars or irregulars lack the star, but that could be a serious block if they do. We don't want the Group to be too exclusive.

Also Group postings DO NOT appear on the Latest page. So they are in a sense invisible unless you know where to look and remember to look there.

These are both excellent reasons why the main KOEB weeknight thread needs to stay where it is, where it is NOT exclusive and IS visible. The Group, if we form it, can be anywhere. Crispini thinks it very unlikely that Skinner would allow it to be formed within the ER-2004 forum. The Media Forum seems reasonable to me. We could put the location of the Group in the OP of each KOEB liveblog thread.

If you start the new brainstorming thread in Media, would you please cut-and-paste these relevant posts so they don't need to be repeated?

Thanks and good night!

236. Yep
I checked and there are a few without stars. The Group would definitely be in with the other Groups, and not here, but the nightly thread should still be here. Posting the Group's address in the OP everynight would tell people where to find us. I'll cut and paste the posts in the new thread and put it in tomorrow's thread.

G'night!

246. That would be lovely. It's hard to do with such long, unwieldy threads
And since you already have your donor star, there would be no problem with your posting in a Group. We would still want to keep the weeknightly KOEB liveblog thread. The hope would be that it would be a bit shorter and a bit more on-topic, and perhaps less intimidating to anyone else who wanted to join us.

Meanwhile, we'd be free to have OT group discussions, expand on points brought up by KO and needing more discussion, so many things. One key here in the KOEB is building a community. I think having the Group to complement the main thread would help toward that goal.

Good night!

263. Hello demjuli and welcome to both DU and the KOEB!!
Yes, absolutely, any one can join us, regardless of estrogen level. After all, it's not as though there's a shortage in the vicinity of the KOEB! Once we form the Group, posting in it -- by DU rules -- will require a Donating DU Member star, which you already have, so no problem. The main KOEB thread will not be in a Group and so will not require the star for posting. We feel this nonexclusivity is important. The idea, after all, is to build a community.

If you've read the other posts in this thread, you know that we'll be discussing the Group formation later today. Patsy Stone is going to start a Group brainstorming thread, which will be linked to and perhaps discussed a bit at tonight's regular KOEB liveblogging thread. Once the Group is formed, a link to its location will be posted in the OP of each night's main thread. That will be important, since another quirk of Groups is that new threads do not appear on the Latest page and so would be hard to find.

You posted those :loveya:s like a pro -- I can see you're a natural! We figure the world can use lots more of them, so after the KOEB meeting whoever's sweeping up just opens the doors and windows and lets them out.

To the Ties That Bind!!! (That's our official KOEB toast!)

212. The only comment I have is that
I'm 99% sure that Skinner would not allow a Group to be started inside ER:2004. None of the other Groups (which are forums for paying members only) are inside Forums (which can also be posted in by non-paying members). I would think that the software might not even be able to DO this. So the group would have to be with all of the other groups, therefore, less easy to find.... But, the other points sound good. Um, do we have any non-star regulars that would be left out by our move to the group?

231. Hello Crispini! Those are points we need to consider.
I would hope that the main KOEB weeknight thread would be largely unchanged, except perhaps perhaps a bit shortened and maybe a bit more focussed on what Keith says.

You are right about needing a star to post in Groups--I just checked. The posts also do not appear on the Latest Page, so those are two more reasons why the main KOEB thread CANNOT be posted within the Group area. We would be far too exclusive (only donating members) and we would be invisible (not appearing on Latest page).

It wouldn't matter so very much where the Group was, as long as the main thread stayed in ER-2004 and we all KNOW where the Group is. We could post its location as part of each OP, for that matter.

The issue of whether there are KOEBers who would LIKE to post in the Group threads but have no star is also important. We'll have to find out. I know that several KOEB regulars donated in the recent campaign, and others may be planning to donate in the near future.

253. I don't think what we're doing here is TRIVIAL...
A lot of good things get said here, in among all the swooning and kvelling over KO.

We're affirming those human qualities which are important -- in KO and in EACH OTHER -- while giving ourselves a chance to bond with like-minded people and generate a few endorphins to lighten our cares in these awful times. :grouphug:

I like the way the thread is allowed just to go wherever it goes and would miss the freedom, if this turned into a more "directed" discussion.

IMO we need a BREAK from all the heaviness and fear which now surrounds us.

"COUNTDOWN" is SERIOUS NEWS WRAPPED IN A HAPPINESS PILL -- and the KOEB just naturally reflects that!!
Please -- let's not change it.

A little bit of fun for an hour or so every night with like-minded people is great! I hope that as summer approaches and we have other distractions we can keep it up fairly regularly.

129. funniest thing. My masseuse today told me that when she was a
young thing, she worked in Hoboken for the United Press International. I asked her if she had ever met Helen Thomas and she said no, she had met others. She then said there was a youngster there they called "The Boy Wonder", who was a sportscaster. She asked me if I had ever heard of a guy named Keith Olbermann. Had I ever heard of him. SIGH! I told her about him and she was tickled pink that he was doing so well, such was his promise in 1979 or so. They had a birthday party for her at the office and he was there with the rest of the group and she has a picture of him. Said he was a tall skinny kid with a lotta talent.

Who knew?

207. Singing:
Such a feelin’s comin’ over me
There is wonder in most everything I see
Not a cloud in the sky
Got the sun in my eyes
And I won’t be surprised if it’s a dream

Everything I want the world to be
Is now coming true especially for me
And the reason is clear
It’s because you are here
You’re the nearest thing to heaven that I’ve seen

(*) I’m on the top of the world lookin’ down on creation
And the only explanation I can find
Is the love that I’ve found ever since you’ve been around
Your love’s put me at the top of the world

Something in the wind has learned my name
And it’s tellin’ me that things are not the same
In the leaves on the trees and the touch of the breeze
There’s a pleasin’ sense of happiness for me

There is only one wish on my mind
When this day is through I hope that I will find
That tomorrow will be just the same for you and me
All I need will be mine if you are here

(*) I’m on the top of the world lookin’ down on creation
And the only explanation I can find
Is the love that I’ve found ever since you’ve been around
Your love’s put me at the top of the world

Some people just don't know their own strength -- but I still always say something, such as "Oh dear... I'll never play the violin again!"

Used to make my living as an office temp. One guy thought he was being funny when he crushed my hand during introductions.
He stayed in at lunchtime, so I saw my oportunity. I told him off quietly but sternly -- and got an apology.
I'd just had an upholstery staple removed from that same hand!!

250. I'm here for the re-run, bettyellen!
How are you, this fine LATE night? :hi:

Husband using system for work all evening again. He lets me jump in and say "Hi!" at 8:00, and then I have to give it back until he finishes -- which is usually around 10:30 or 11!

It's exasperating -- but we can afford high-speed on account of it, sooo....
