The Guardian: BNP leader faces race hate charges
BNP leader faces race hate charges

Press Association
Wednesday April 6, 2005

The leader of the British National party was today charged with four race hate offences, police said.
Nick Griffin, 45, was arrested at his home in mid-Wales last December by West Yorkshire police as part of a long-running investigation into the BBC programme Secret Agent.

Mr Griffin answered his bail today at Halifax police station and was charged with four offences of using words or behaviour intended or likely to stir up racial hatred.

The Secret Agent documentary, screened in July last year, featured undercover filming of BNP activists.

I'm glad these fascist thugs are being investigated.

2. This is very good
Nick Griffin's raison d'etre as leader of the B.N.P. was to turn its back on the worse elements of its past; these charges will help to expose that as nothing other than pathetic window-dressing.

3. While I would normally welcome this unreservedly
bringing charges just before an election is the sort of thing Mugabe & his ilk do. Now I'm sure this isn't the case, but it could be taken to be that & used by the BNP.

4. I've already seen a BNP supporter claim just that on another board
including the analogy to Zimbabwe. It is, of course, exactly the kind of rhetoric they hope appeals to their targets - "white men being oppressed by black men", etc. At the same time, he's desperately trying to claim that Griffin calling a 'mixed-race' marriage immoral and abnormal is not racist in any way.

7. "Mr Griffin led a rendition of Jerusalem followed by the Lord's Prayer .."

Yet more evidence of the Skin's theory that piety is fast replacing patriotism as the last resort of the scoundrel.

8. Actually
The Church of England, plus many other denominations have strongly condemmed the BNP! The Church wants nothing whatsoever to do this these people. The BNP's teachings are in total opposition to the teachings of Christ and the Church has noticed this. The BNP is the one party who the Church goes out of its way to condemm.

9. You misunderstand me, Thanx.
In the spirit of Dr. Johnson, I'm not condemning piety, I'm condemning scoundrels who "use" it.

10. Well....
given the record of DUer's in anti-religious bigotry you do tend to be a bit worried about people trying to deliberatly distort Christianity on here.

And Griffin also is trying to use religious bigotry, mingled of course with racial bigotry. The stance of the Church does show attempts by the BNP to use Christianity to be something of of a con.

11. Yes, the UK churches' record on condemning racism is pretty sound.
I don't think that DU has an anti-Christian bias - I see a lot of Christians on the Forums. The problem really is the way that a large number of American Christians - not just the Evangelists - have allied themselves with the repressive and intolerant Neocon political agenda. You can't blame those who don't share their views - and see the threat of having them imposed on them - for kicking back hard.
