1. Why can't they keep her?
I can't say I like Sam Sullivan, but at least he knows the city, the issues and has municipal experience.

2. Sort of ironic...

I was brought up in Port Moody/Coquitlam, but escaped the 'burbs and moved to the West End the moment I graduated from high school. I've been here for 20+ years (except for a few years on Commercial Drive), and Christie the soccer mom ain't even on my political radar.

I highly doubt she's familiar with our problems/issues here in the big smoke (Downtown East Side, junkies, prostitution, street crime, the homeless, GLBT issues, etc.) if in fact SHE WAS FORCED TO TALK TO HERSELF AND/OR HER BABY ALL ALONE OUT IN THE STICKS. And then there's my property taxes here in the concrete jungle...

At any rate, I don't usually get into civic politics until the final week prior to the election, so soccer mommy from Port Moody better get with it (and not just pounding the pavement, saying little of consequence, as she's been doing) or it's Jim Green for me all the way.

Jim's the perfect lefty candidate for Mayor: he's socialist, he's lived in the 'hood forever, knows every inch of the pavement, is pro-small AND big business (but especially "alternative" small biz like bars and clubs), yet he's well aware the aging yuppies/old money of the West Side will be watching him like hawks if he's elected. (Which serves me very well, incidently...I'm a hard core lefty, but the condo I bought in the late 80's has nearly TRIPLED in value. That should make me happy, however my taxes have shot up in kind as well. And I'm making only slightly more in salary than I did back when I bought it).

I'm Jim's demographic to a tee...I've even had after-work beers with the guy at the Railway Club on several occasions (yup, he's THAT working class), though this was back when he was running DERA and on city council, before he had his eye on the Mayor's seat. Haven't talked to him in person lately...

Green's 'da man. No contest.

4. Maybe...
...Sullivan just voted against the Woodwards thing though. If that could be tied in well, with the attempt to revitialize the downtown-eastside, it'll make it look like he's offside on the biggest issue during the last municipal campaign and one that's sure to be a big issue this campaign.

Sullivan lead the No side to what at the time was seen as a "suprise upset" of the Wards campaign, whereas Green was in favour of the Yes side. That being said, the people allied with Green were hugely un-organized, I don't think they'll make that mistake again. Besides, a devisive NPA nomination meeting (and they've NEVER had one before), could lead to a poor NPA campaign.

Apparently Clark signed up 2200 new members, Sullivan only signed up 1000, considering the existing 2000~ NPA members (I read all this in the news so google it), he's defenetly the underdog.

5. It now appears that way
Proving once again, the stupidity of the Right.

If you had been DESTROYED by the most left wing party in the country... would you prop up someone associated with the most right wing party for the next election?

Especially when you have a well-known, moderate-type guy already on council?

Fucking retards.

7. It's even wierder that they're doing this...
...considering that COPE has completely self-distructed over the cult of (Larry) Campbell. I mean really, that was the main reason, other than claiming that "COPE Classic" were a bunch of hard-left hippies, that 'Vision Vancouver' split off. It was all about personal pre-madonnaism.

The NPA had the perfect opportunity to get back in. Now with this, it'll be much harder. But it couldn't happen to a nicer bunch of people, who ruled over the city arrogantly like it was their own personal feifedom more or less for the previous ten years.

Did you hear about this?

Mayoral candidates vie for votes at NPA meeting

One thing they learned is that Clark is still getting familiar with Vancouver names. She referred to the Southeast False Creek project as the south False Creek project and twice she said COPE when she meant NPA.

The second time, after she was wrapping up her opening speech with "Let's return a COPE majority to city council," audience members called out to correct her.

:7 Freudin slip?

Also, the way she keeps talking about "law and order", that's so suburban. In Vancouver anyways, you have to get into all those wierd little issues like improving traffic flow, making sure things are zoned well, blah blah blah. Getting "tough" on crime, is a little cliche. We all like public safety, but the city isn't being gripped by crime so I don't really get why she's only talking about that... unless she doesn't really get Vancouver issues.

Point being, Sam Sullivan (while I doubt I'd vote for him) would make a much better candidate and actual mayor than her.

8. Yeah, the last time Vancouver was in the grip of a crime wave was...
Oh shit, it was when the NPA was in! Well, that's not fair the amount of homicides did reduce during the last five years of their reign...but then they kicked out Phillip Owen (the guy responsivle for that).

See clark to day weighing in on the teachers strike? What fucking opportunist.

9. Sam Sullivan appears to have won...
http://www.publiceyeonline.com/archives/000888.html

We now have the results of Vancouver Non-Partisan mayoral nomination race, as just announced by president Paul Barbeau. And the winner is: Vancouver city councillor Sam Sullivan, who accepted the nomination with Fleetwood Mac's Don't Stop Thinking About Tomorrow booming in the background. The fact those results were more than 90 minutes late in coming in could be an indication that a great many ballots were challenged during vote counting.
