Ignatieff angered by critics of Games
Ignatieff angered by critics of Games

By JOAN BRYDEN The Canadian Press
Thu. Feb 18 - 4:54 AM
OTTAWA — Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff is riding to the defence of Vancouver Olympic organizers, dismissing critics of the controversy-plagued Games as "nattering nabobs of negativism."

Ignatieff, fresh from attending the opening days of the Winter Games, said complainers have fixated on "a few glitches" and ignored the impressive sporting facilities and wildly enthusiastic crowds.

"I feel angry about it, actually," he said Wednesday. "I feel that VANOC, yeah, it hasn’t been perfect — there’ve been some glitches — but this is a great Games and, from the Canadian point of view, this is one of the greatest moments in our national life since (centennial celebrations in) 1967."

Ignatieff seemed most upset by the fierce critiques levelled by the British press, to whose ranks he used to belong. He was particularly ticked with The Guardian, a newspaper in which he’s published a number of articles.

One Guardian writer, Lawrence Donegan, has said the technical problems, lousy weather, cancelled tickets and other controversies are threatening to make these Games "the worst in Olympic history."

Hmmm, has the harper cabal spoken up yet? I haven't seen anything from them yet but maybe I missed it but I doubt it, lol.

3. I've missed a lot of it too (which is why I come here hoping to read more)
but haven't seen him there either. Harper defending Canada though probably isn't gonna happen.

4. Keeping their heads down so far,
altho I'm sure Harper is itching to say something. But by waiting, Iggy beat him to it.

7. I guess he hasn't received his talking points from south of the border yet...
or the advice from his buddies, the bush acolytes, was to keep quiet, lol.

5. No Olympic bounce yet, polls still tied.
EKOS of the Day: Well, no Olympic bounce yet -- for anyone.

Well, since I've been banned from using sports metaphors for the duration of the Olympics -- mediated settlement, details to remain confidential -- I can't call this a "dead heat," so let's just say that not a lot has changed since last week. Well, not as far as the national numbers, at least; as usual, when you poke around in the regional data, there are a few shifts worth noting.

6. I love Kady!
"I can't call this a "dead heat"..."

Seeing as the cons were hoping for an Olympic bounce and got 'nuttin', this is good news, imo!

8. I liked her better at Macleans,
she seems somewhat 'toned down' at CBC....but yes, this is good news.

I don't know why Harper thot the games would make Canada so filled with patriotic fervour they'd give HIM a majority, but it was certainly a miscalculation.

Lawrence Martin of the G&M points out today that if the men's hockey team loses...run for cover.
