CBC News

Two people have been killed and another seriously injured after a CN freight train derailed north of Lillooet, B.C.

Federal investigators are on the scene to determine the cause of the accident, which occurred about 40 kilometres north of Lillooet about 5 p.m. on Thursday, CN spokesman Jim Feeny told CBC News.

Over the past year there have been several train derailments in B.C., including two incidents on the same day in December.

Last August, a CN freight train derailed about 30 kilometres north of Squamish, dumping 41,000 litres of toxic sodium hydroxide into the Cheakamus River canyon.

1. For perspective...
From December 6, 2005

Derailment is 11th of the year

Another CN train went off the tracks Monday between Squamish and Whistler, in the same area where a CN derailment this August dumped 40,000 litres of highly corrosive caustic soda into the Cheakamus River and killed thousands of salmon and other fish.

Although all seven cars that jumped the tracks Monday in the Cheakamus Canyon were empty and there was no toxic spill into the river this time, it was the 11th main-track derailment along the former BC Rail line this year.

Van Sun

Campbell sold BC Rail to CN in 2003 (a campaign lie which invalidates the purpose of democracy, again) and apparantly since then CN has done pretty much whatever it wants and has ignored the previous BC Rail experience on these rather treacherous set of tracks.

Hopefully they will figure it all out by 2010 when they are hosting the Olympics... :eyes:
