1. Burner campaign to host Toxic Toy Testing events
We have exciting news to share with you and hope you will help us spread the word. Darcy Burner for Congress will be sponsoring Toxic Toy Testing events in 7 cities in the 8th Congressional District. At these free community events people can bring in old toys and new toys to be tested for toxic substances including lead with an XFR Analyzer. People will also learn about toy recalls and what they can do to protect their families as well as how they can help create change at a federal level.

I am sure you are aware of the many recent stories about toxic substances in toys and I am certain all of you share our concern about keeping our kids safe. Please help us spread the word about these events by posting the attached flyer, sharing the flyer with your membership and emailing the flyer to those you care about.

Please let me know if you can help us spread the word or would like to attend or help at one of the events.

2. Cheryl Crist to run against Brian Baird
This is an invitation to those of you living in or near Olympia to join with others who support my effort to go to Congress...to attain the seat currently held by Brian Baird.

We will meet at Traditions Fair Trade Cafe (corner of 5th and Water), 7-9pm, Tuesday, February 26. This is a "meet, greet and plan" event.

There are many jobs that need to be done, and many hands make light work, to quote a cliche. With lots of volunteers, no one will be overworked, and we will all have the delight of knowing we are unseating a pro-war Representative.

Some of the roles that need to be filled: media team, a data base person, a house party coordinator, fund raising team, an events team, house party hosts, door-to-door volunteers, people who will table at community events, people who will install yard signs, LTE coordinator, and so on.

I view my campaign as a part of the on-going peace and prosperity-for-all movement.... I think we can win this. I have a plan. It involves all of you.

If you are receiving this but don't live in the Olympia area, please be aware that I will hold similar meetings soon in Vancouver, Centralia/Chehalis and (hopefully) Longview/Kelso. The team we put together in Thurston County can be replicated in the other areas.

I look forward to seeing you there. If you can't make it Tuesday night but do want to be a part of the campaign, please contact me by phone or e-mail. My number is 754-7631.

In peace and friendship,
Cheryl Crist

The elected Commissioner of Public Lands manages ALL of the States salt-water tidelands?

The incumbent, Doug Sutherland, has tried to increase the state's timber harvest by almost 30% until a court shot down his plan?

The incumbent, Doug Sutherland, has resisted improving the logging rules on steep and unstable slopes so they would not produce catastrophic floods?

A little over 60% of incumbent Doug Sutherland's contributions to date (over $102,000) have come from timber, mining, and real estate interests?

9. Gregoire kickoff 4/7 in Auburn
For three years, we've seen Governor Gregoire taking on challenges and getting results for us. She's created more than 225,000 new jobs, provided 84,000 more kids with healthcare coverage, and reduced crime to its lowest rate in over a decade.

The re-election of Governor Chris Gregoire is the most important statewide race for the Washington State Democratic Party in 2008. Please visit her website to learn about her campaign:
http://www.chrisgregoire.com

How can you help now? Governor Gregoire will be kicking off her re-election campaign on April 7th, making stops across Washington State. She will begin her tour in her hometown of Aubun. You can start by attending Governor Gregoire's kick-off event, where you can learn how to get involved in the campaign.

Please come out and support Governor Gregoire in Auburn:
Monday, April 7th

10. Campaign fundraiser for Cheryl Crist 4/6 in Olympia
You probably know Cheryl Crist, who has been a supporter of Dennis Kucinich and who is now running for Congress in the 3rd District, against Brian Baird.

I hope you can join us for an evening of music, inspiration and energy to elect a peace candidate to Congress!

WHAT: Concert Fundraiser for Cheryl Crist, Candidate for U.S. House of Representatives

WHEN: Sunday, April 6, 6:00 p.m.

WHERE: Artisans Cafe (www.theartisanscafe.com)
109 Capitol Way N, Olympia
(360) 570-2202

My partner Michael Hurwicz and I will be performing at the fundraiser. We're an acoustic music duo, playing guitars and fiddle, and singing in harmony about peace and protecting our beautiful planet. There is always laughter and inspiration to be had at our concerts, so please come and nourish yourself with music and some prime coffee and munchies available for purchase by the Artisans Cafe.

Holly Gwinn Graham will do a 20-minute opening set.

And of course, you'll meet Cheryl and get to hear from her about her campaign.

Cheryl's website is http://www.cristforcongress.us/.

Cheryl is running against one of several Democrats whose votes far too often do not represent the interests of working people and the values of the Democratic Party. When representatives, funded by our tax dollars, are not representing the best interests of the people they're charged with representing, we need to hold them accountable and to challenge them. It is wildly expensive to run a campaign and especially difficult to unseat an incumbent.

I believe that if we support candidates like Cheryl, we can help change this.

I don't yet know if there will be a specific donation requested. I will email that information to you as soon as I have it.

With thanks, best wishes and in peace,

Shar

13. Candidates over on the Dry Side
http://www.tri-cityherald.com/944/story/163461.html
Just a few quick links here to get you up to speed on the latest candidate news.

We had a story in this morning’s paper about Steve Simmons’ announcement that he’ll run as a Republican for the 8th Legislative District House seat now occupied by Rep. Shirley Hankins, R-Richland. The Benton County restaurateur is the third Republican in the race. And that doesn’t include Hankins, who hasn’t yet indicated whether she’ll seek a 13th term.

Richland Democrat Carol Moser also is running for the seat.

In the 40th Legislative District it’s fair to ask whether there is anybody who is not running for the Senate seat held by the retiring Harriet Spanel, D-Bellingham. Sam Taylor at the Bellingham Herald reports community activist Stephanie Kountouros and Paul Gonzales, a veteran of the Washington State Patrol, are the latest to have stepped forward, though it’s not mentioned which party they affiliate themselves with.

And in the 5th Congressional District the Spokesman-Review’s Jim Camden is reporting that Democrat Jennie Willardson, who ran unsuccessfully for a seat on the Spokane Valley City Council in 2005, will challenge Republican U.S. Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers this fall. Spokane psychologist Mark Mays also is running as a Democrat.

14. Ladenburg for Attorney General
Your opinion and your support are important to me. That's why I want you to know I'm running for Attorney General in Washington State.

I firmly believe it's time for a change in the office of the Attorney General.

Instead of preserving our personal freedoms, protecting our environment and increasing consumer safety, my Republican opponent has been running public service announcements with him as the star. In effect, he's campaigning with your tax dollars.

To win this campaign, I need your help because I can't do it alone. Please join us for my Campaign Kick-Off on May 5th at the Westin Hotel Seattle with Governor Gregoire, Former Governor Gary Locke, King County Executive Ron Sims, and Snohomish County Executive Aaron Reardon. If you are not able to attend, I hope that you will consider sending a contribution to support me in this campaign. Just visit our website at www.ladenburg. org.

It's time for more independence and less politicking from the Attorney General's Office. The incumbent follows the George Bush party line and I believe the people of Washington need an impartial watchdog that knows his way around a courtroom, not just meeting rooms and TV studios.

I have over 33 years of experience trying hundreds of civil and criminal cases in court. I have the experience this job requires and my opponent lacks. I know how to get sex predators and scam artists into the courtroom and get results once they're in front of a jury. Real trial experience is an absolute necessity for the position of Attorney General.

Sincerely,
John Ladenburg

P.S. In order to show a viable campaign, my campaign team has set a goal of raising $250,000 before May 31st. Please contribute today to help me reach my goal

The Right Person for the Job
Your Values, Your Vote

I am the only Treasurer candidate who has not spent a career in State Government. I understand that the role of Treasurer is not just about spreadsheets and bond ratings-it's about protecting the long term interests taxpayers and building equity and smart investments for future generations.

In the legislature, I worked across the aisle to forge finance solutions that provide fiscal accountability and stability to small communities as well as our urban areas. I understands that the job is as important to Main St. as it is to Wall St.

A consistent and strong voice for small business, working families, kids, and the environment, I will bring these values to the Treasurer's office.
I Need Your Support

Please visit my website and sign up to volunteer and contribute financially to my campaign. Every dollar you can give will help us get closer to victory. You can visit https://www.upwardstech.net/jimmcintire/ to contribute with ease online.

21. Tina Orwall wins endorsement of 33rd LD Dems and environmental groups
Tina Orwall Wins Party Nomination, Sole Endorsement from Washington Conservation Voters

Momentum building for award winning affordable housing leader with new endorsements and growing support from education, labor, and elected leaders throughout the region

Normandy Park, WA -- Award-winning affordable housing advocate, former Highline PTA leader and Democratic Party activist Tina Orwall reached two important campaign milestones in the last week, including winning the official nomination of the 33rd LD Democrats and the sole endorsement of the Washington Conservation Voters.

These achievements come on the heels of other recent endorsements, including the sole endorsement of the Washington Education Association, local elected leaders from around the district, unions including IBEW local 46, and a dual endorsement from the Washington State Labor Council.

Orwall is running for the seat being vacated by incumbent Representative Shay Schual-Berke who is retiring at the end of this term.

Schual-Berke has endorsed Orwall and spoke on her behalf at the nomination convention, comprised of elected and appointed PCOs voting weighted ballots based on the number of delegates within their precincts as of the February precinct caucus.

"I am extremely honored and excited to have received the Democratic nomination from my 33rd LD District Organization, " said Tina. "This is an outstanding organization that has some of the most dedicated Democrats I have ever had the pleasure to know."

The Washington Conservation Voters also gave Orwall a sole endorsement. As co-chair of the King County Democrats Legislative Action Committee, Orwall worked extensively on environmental legislative priorities including recent toxic toy regulations and cleanup of Puget Sound.

"I'm honored to have the endorsement and confidence of the environmental community and pledge to be a strong partner in the effort to address climate change and protect our air and water," said Orwall. "It's great momentum for our campaign."

Overall, Orwall has taken a lead over both of her current opponents in fundraising, endorsements, and knocking on doors—the critical measures of a campaign's organization and support.

"The campaign is going very well and I am working every day to meet voters and build on a strong base of support," said Orwall. "Voters are looking for real leadership on issues ranging from the economy and education to transportation and the environment. I look forward to a long summer of meeting with, and listening to, the people of the 33rd District."

32. House party for Tina 6/22 in Normandy Park
This is an important time to unite as a party and to work hard together so we can be assured of a victory in November. We have so much at stake from the White House--to the Governor's Race--to the Washington State House of Representatives! I would like to ask for your support as we work to keep strong Democratic representation in Olympia in the 33rd Legislative District.

Please join us at a special gathering on Sunday, June 22nd from 2:00-4:30 in Normandy Park at the lovely home of Helen Kludt (see invitation below) to celebrate the campaign that will keep our seat in Olympia and to honor Rep. Shay Schual-Berke for her 10 years of service. Our hosts will be Senator Karen Keiser, Representative Dave Upthegrove, and King County Councilmembers Dow Constantine and Julia Patterson.

I would like to make a special thank you to Elizabeth Albertson who has lent me her support after running a strong, positive campaign that allows us to come together as Democrats to defeat the GOP candidate that is running in this race.
To learn more about the campaign, volunteer or donate please see our website at www.electtinaorwall.com.
Thank you your support and I hope to see you on the 22nd!

27. I'd recommend getting started with voter registration
Inslee looks to be a done deal, and won't need a lot of extra help. Take part in your local LD endorsement process and help them assemble candidate packets. SecState and Land Commissioner are important as well.

29. Stonewall Dems fundraiser for LD 5 Senate Candidate Phyllis Huster
WASHINGTON STONEWALL DEMOCRATS TO HOST LGBT 'TEA PARTY' FUNDRAISER TO KICK OFF GAY PRIDE WEEK IN SEATTLE

The Washington State Stonewall Democrats host a fundraiser that benefits Democratic candidate Phyllis Huster in her upcoming State Senate race in Legislative District 5, and will be held at the Capitol Hill home of Rod Hearn and Roger Nyhus on June 22nd from 2 to 5 p.m.

State Senator Ed Murray, State Representatives Marko Liias and Jim Moeller, Seattle City Councilwoman Sally Clark and Pierce County Councilman Tim Farrell are co-hosts of the event, which will feature the infamous menu of exotic hors d'oeuvres made by Voodoo Kitchen Catering.

Ms. Huster is the 5th Legislative District's Democratic nominee for the State Senate and if elected will become the first open Lesbian elected to statewide office in Washington. Her election would make the Gay Caucus of the Washington Legislature the largest in the nation. Ms. Huster would join the Gay Caucus with Senators Murray and Joe McDermott in the Senate, and Representatives Liias, Jamie Pedersen, Jim Moeller and Dave Upthegrove in the House.

To RSVP or ask any questions about the event, please contact Anita Latch: anita {at} stonewalldemswa.org or Chris Nelson, Ms. Huster's Campaign Manager at 360-362-9067, email: chris {at} phyllisforsenate.com.

30. Re-elect Mike Kreidler for Insurance Commissioner
It's an exciting time to be a Democrat!

The prospects for much-needed change at the national level have never been better. And I want our Washington to lead the way to achieving guaranteed, affordable health insurance for everyone.

I have a proposal to do just that!

My Guaranteed Health Benefits Plan is affordable, preserves choice and ensures that every resident of Washington State is protected. For more information about my proposal, visit http://www.kreidler2008.com/issues1.cfm

I have been honored to serve as your state Insurance Commissioner for the past eight years. With your help, I will continue to be a strong and independent voice for consumers during the next four years.

The struggle to defend consumers has not been easy, but our successes have made it worth the! effort. A few of these include:

Preventing Premera Blue Cross from converting from non-profit to "for-profit" status
Successfully fighting big out-of-state insurance companies that tried to repeal our state's Insurance Fair Conduct Act (Referendum 67)

Cutting excessive insurance rate increases by more than $200 million
Helping thousands of individual consumers receive more than $107 million in delayed or denied payments

Restoring bankrupt health, malpractice and life insurance companies to profitability

But nothing is more important to me than the struggle to reform our broken health insurance system.

I will be reaching out to as many individuals, small businesses, large employers, and organizations as possible in the coming year to build support for legislative action in 2009.

It won't be easy to break the logjam and achieve real reform. Will you help me?

Please take the time to make any donation you can afford to my campaign by clicking here: https://www.kreidler2008.com/donate.cfm

Regardless of who my opponent may be, I intend to use my campaign to focus on the need for health insurance reform NOW and share with you HOW we can make it happen together.

With your help, our Washington will show the other Washington how to solve this crisis.

Thanks so much,

Mike Kreidler

34. Dave Upthegrove LD 33 campaign kickoff in Des Moines 7/17
Please join Governor Chris Gregoire and other local Democrats next Thursday July 17th from 5:30- 7:00 PM at the Des Moines Yacht Club for a pizza party and rally to kickoff my campaign for re-election to the State House of Representatives from the 33rd District.

Kids and families are welcome at this beautiful Puget Sound waterfront location for pizza, soft drinks, beer & wine, and a program of political speakers including Governor Gregoire.

Representatives from the Obama Campaign will be on-hand as well. Please join us for some fun, some food, and to learn how you can get involved locally to be a part of the movement for change.

In order to have good jobs and a strong economy, we need to keep South King County a great place to live. As Chairman of the House Ecology & Parks Committee I have worked closely with the Governor on progressive initiatives to clean up Puget Sound and to tackle the challenge of global climate change. I also have worked with the Governor to improve education and make our public schools work for all students.

I hope you will join me to help launch my re-election campaign and to give the Governor an enthusiastic warm welcome in our community. Contributions to "The Upthegrove Campaign" will be gratefully accepted.

I hope you can all make it in person, but for those unable to attend:

44. Work for Kevin Bender (State Senator) 7/19 in Skagit County
I usually ask you to join Democrats Work at a service project in your community. Today, I'm asking for service of a different kind.

Our friends at the Washington Bus have a special offer for you: go to Mt. Vernon this weekend and help change the world. Sounds good, right?

This Saturday, July 19th, the Washington Bus will travel to Skagit County to help elect state Senate candidate Kevin Ranker. Kevin - the youngest member of the San Juan County Council - is an amazing candidate who is going to shake things up in Olympia. He's a lifelong conservation leader, Chair of the Puget Sound Salmon Recovery Council, and a surfer with a commitment to our schools and our economy. He needs your help to win.

So, how does the Washington Bus work? You fill an actual bus with volunteer riders (you!) and knock on thousands of doors in important swing districts across the state.

There are only a few seats left for this Saturday. Click here to get your ticket! http://www.washingtonbus.org/index.php?option=com_events&type=event&task=details&id=28&Itemid=61

The bus leaves at 9:00 a.m. from Beacon Hill in Seattle. You'll be back by 7:00 p.m. In between, you'll eat breakfast, hang out with great folks, have lunch, knock on a thousand doors, eat dinner, and, for dessert, you will savor the sweet taste of world-changing work.

Enjoy!

Thomas Bates
Co-Founder and Executive Director, Democrats Work

communities throughout the Sound to highlight what she is doing and what we all can do to save it.

We want YOU to meet her at the "Ports of Call" along the way!

Did you KNOW that…

• The elected Commissioner of Public Lands manages over 2 million acres of state forests?
• The elected Commissioner of Public Lands is responsible for regulating over 9 million acres of private forest land?
• The elected Commissioner of Public Lands manages ALL of the state's salt-water tidelands?
• The incumbent has tried to increase the state's timber harvest by almost 30% until a court shot down his plan?
• The incumbent has resisted improving the logging rules on steep and unstable slopes so they would not produce catastrophic floods?
• A little over 50% of incumbent's contributions to date have come from timber, mining, and real estate interests?

Peter Goldmark will restore public trust in the management of OUR public lands.

59. Support John Burbank in the 46th LD
Recently I've received two emails from an outfit called "People for Jobs" on behalf of legislative candidate Reuven Carlyle, the "pro-business" Democrat running in the 36th District. I know that People for Jobs has sent out emails on behalf of several Republican candidates, as well. I think it's important that you know who this outfit represents.

People for Jobs has one contributor: Enterprise Washington Jobs PAC. The total list of contributors to that PAC are Weyerhaeuser, Building United Insurance, Physicians Insurance, Washington Restraurant Association, Port Blakely Trees, Master Builders of America, PSE, Green Diamond, McKinsistry Co, Safeco, United for Washington, Bank of America, Chevron, Premera Blue Cross, National Federation of Independent Businesses, Phillip Morris, Retail Action Council, Washington Food Industry Association, Alaska Distributors, Simpson, Utility Contractors, Braun NW and Jobs PAC; plus half a dozen corporate executives and three individuals who gave small amounts and don't show their jobs. (These last three accounted for $250 out of the $379,877.32 contributed).

And what is Enterprise Washington? As you might guess from the funders, Enterprise Washington exists to promote business interests - in fact, they say that "The Business Coalition is the new Political Party." And they identify "the opposition" as "AFL-CIO, SEIU, Teachers Unions, State Employees Unions, Trial Lawyers, Tribes, Environmental Organizations" plus Progressive Majority and Fuse Washington.

Now what's really amazing is that this corporate advocacy group backing pro-business candidates - this voice for corporate interests that identifies "environmental organizations" as "the opposition" - Enterprise Washington made an independent expenditure on behalf of Reuven Carlyle (I'm not sure if they support any other Democrats) stressing what a great environmental candidate Carlyle is. This is like having the National Right to Work Committee send out an email saying that one of their candidates is a great labor supporter. And this corporate voice that identifies teachers unions and state employee unions also made an independent expenditure for Carlyle saying that he's a great voice for education.

Over 43% of Carlyle's contributions - more than $100,000 - come from corporations, business associations and self-identified corporate executives. And that doesn't include the "independent expenditures" from Enterprise Washington - or the $15,000 in "independent expenditures" by the Realtor Quality of Life PAC.

Corporate interests from insurance companies to banks to utilities to real estate developers to hotels and restaurants to high tech are pouring money into this race. We can't let corporate front groups pretend to speak for environmentalism and public education. We can't let corporate interests buy the 36th District legislative seat. John Burbank is the pro-labor, pro-environment, pro-public education candidate for that legislative seat. John has been endorsed by the Washington State Labor Council and over two dozen unions; he's been endorsed by the Washington Education Association and the American Federation of Teachers-Washington; he's been endorsed by the State, County and 36th District Democrats; he's been endorsed by National Organization for Women, Women's Political Caucus and NARAL-Pro Choice Washington.

John does not accept corporate donations. Building on a huge base of individual contributors, plus substantial support from labor and other progressive groups, he's raised over $200,000. But it's hard to keep up with all the corporate funds flowing to Carlyle. John has been Executive Director of the Economic Opportunity Institute, a leading advocate for fair taxes; Political Director for the Washington State Labor Council; staff for the House Democratic Caucus ; a peace and environmental activist; and staff for Fremont Public Association (now Solid Ground), one of Seattle's largest social service organizations.

John was a key architect of our best-in-the-nation minimum wage law. He built the coalition for the Basic Health Plan which protected health care for 100,000 and provided care for an additional 25,000. John developed the policy to reinstate the estate tax to fund public education, resulting in an additional $105 million per year for education.

If you live in the 36th District, or have friends in the 36th District, please join me to support John Burbank. But even if you can't vote for John, please help him combat the onslaught of corporate money flowing into our District. I know that times are tough, and if you care about the elections, you're probably making a lot of donations. But these last two weeks can be crucial. Please help us elect a friend of labor and a long-time activist to the Legislature by going on-line to www.johnburbank.com and make a donation to John's campaign.
