Actress Holland Taylor met iconic Texas politician Ann Richards only once.
Yet Taylor felt devastated when Richards, Texas' governor from 1991 to 1995, died of cancer in 2006.
“I'd followed her career, when she was governor and after,” Taylor says. “Not that closely, but I'd hear about her exploits from time to time. I found her captivating. Just knowing she was out there was important. I guess I'd figured she was going to be this heroic sunshine figure in my life for years to come. Then she died, and I couldn't have been more knocked out by that — like lots of people, I'd imagine.”
Taylor found the outlet for both her admiration and sense of loss by creating Money, Marbles and Chalk!, the solo play she will premiere Friday through Sunday at Galveston's Grand 1894 Opera House. Framed as a graduation address to students at Bugtussle College, this “affectionate sketch of Ann Richards” deals chiefly with Rich-ards' time as governor but depicts other chapters of her life, as well.
“If I'd been a painter, I would have done a portrait of her,” Taylor says. “But driving to work one day three years ago, the idea suddenly hit me. I literally had to pull over. A solo play about her was absolutely the way to go — because there never was a person more suited to the stage...
