Could Arizona Immigration Law Come To Texas?
by Jay Gormley

Two Texas Republican lawmakers plan to introduce tough immigration measures similar to the new law in Arizona, a move that state Democrats say would be a mistake.

The Arizona law will require local and state law enforcement to question people about their immigration status -- and make it a crime for immigrants to lack registration documents. The law is set to take effect later this summer.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano told a U.S. Senate hearing Tuesday that a Justice Department review is under way to determine the Arizona law's constitutionality.
State Rep. Debbie Riddle of Tomball said she will push for the law in the January legislative session.

(snip)

State Rep. Leo Berman of Tyler told CBS 11 that he also plans to file similar legislation. "They're doing their job as law enforcement officers. We're doing our job as legislatures. The congress is not doing it and neither is the President.

I'm not surprised that the usual suspects would think of enacting something this odious.

1. I don't think it will.

I can almost guarantee it won't if we can replace our Governor with Bill White in November. Regardless of the Governor, Texas has a larger percentage of Latinos than Arizona, making it much more risky here and one that I think would surely fail.

Let the wingnuts keep talking about it. The more they talk, the more voters we will have to vote them out of office! This does not fair well for them and a large portion of our population have their eyes and ears wide open right now. :)

(Edited to add) I would LOVE to hear what Molly would say about all of this!

2. "usual suspects"
The usual suspects are pretty much the base of the Texas Rebpuclican party. So Leo "Nazi" Berman came to the hate wall first, but Debbie Riddle came very soon there after.

3. Debbie Riddle is being challenged by Democrat Brad Neal
Leo Berman, unfortunately, has no Democratic challenger that I'm aware of. Pity.

4. On the Other Hand...
I think it's unfortunate that Tyler seems to specialize in sending some of the worst reactionaries to the state legislature, and that Berman's seat looks safe enough. On the other hand, I'm having this entertaining vision of the Texas legislature 20-30 years from now where Berman and a small corporal's guard of Republican reactionaries sit and fume while a solidly-Democratic majority state house and state senate do the people's business.

That might be even better karma coming around than simply getting fired by their constituents.

5. Thank you Brad Neal
It would be a dream come true to have Riddle lose her seat.

6. Only if the GOP wants to commit suicide
of course, even if they have the gun pointed at their head, they'd wind up shooting themselves in the foot anyway.
