After an arsonist's fire gutted the Texas governor's Mansion a couple of years ago, we felt heartsick. That lovely old white-columned house has seen a lot of history. Built in 1856, it's been the home to every governor from Sam Houston to Rick Perry. “Pappy” O'Daniel hosted his radio show there, and John Connally recovered from his gunshot wounds. George W. Bush ran for president.
Thankfully, Texans rallied to bring the Mansion back to its former glory. But we felt sick again when we heard about the first round of plans proposed by the State Preservation Board, which is chaired by Gov. Perry. Besides restoring the Mansion, the board proposed a new 3,000-square-foot addition, an awkward two-story hulk attached to the house by a weird hallway-cum-umbilical cord. The agglomeration would have wrecked the view of the Mansion from the Capitol building.
