Commissioner of the General Land Office?
Of all the contested races on my ballot, this is one I've heard very little about. Any smart opinions on who's the better candidate, Hector Uribe or Bill Burton? And please provide pros and cons. I need to vote today before Early Vote ends. Thanks fellow Texas DUers.

1. I voted for Hector Uribe
He was a Texas State Senator, so he's had a lot of legislative experience. He will do the best job for the state on environment. Plus I like the fact that he would represent undeserved areas like our border and RGV area.

Here is some of the message he sent out today.
(snip)
My committee assignments were varied and interesting, and covered a broad range of areas, including protection of our environment, such as making sure Texans have clean water to drink, and clean air to breathe. In the Senate’s I chaired the standing sub-committee on Water was vice-chair of the joint subcommittee on Oil Spills and Water Pollution Abatement. I authored laws protecting Texans from pollutants and carcinogens and conserving Texas’s natural resources.

That is what brought me to this race. The Texas Land Commissioner is specifically tasked to manage the state’s land and resources. The commissioner supervises our beaches, bays, the forests of East Texas and majestic expanses of West Texas. It produces revenue for the permanent school fund by leasing drilling rights and runs complex and important programs ranging from the Adopt-A-Beach program to the Oil Spill Prevention and Response program. It’s also important that the Texas Land Commissioner is among those on the Texas Legislative Redistricting Board.

This campaign is about every Democrat running for office and every person in Texas. With your help, we will mobilize both historic voters and new voters in the often-neglected parts of San Antonio, Brownsville, McAllen, Harlingen, Del Rio, El Paso, Corpus Christie and the rest of the Hispanic communities of Texas.

I respect the natural and historic heritage of our state, and that is what we need in our Land Commissioner. A call to service brought me to this race, and together, we will win it. We are not working to win a seat in the Land Commissioner’s office, but assure we take back the Governor’s Mansion, the Texas House, and better representation throughout Texas. This is the year, we work together, to end the Republican control of Texas.

2. Thanks! I knew I could count on sonias
:yourock:
I got that email today too. It was the first I'd heard from any of the candidates, so that prompted the question. Had I gone blind into the polling place, I probably would have voted for Uribe because the name is familiar, but I like to be somewhat educated.

3. Plus he has a wicked sense of humor
Hector had a small part in the Coen Brother's "No Country For Old Men" movie.

off the Kuff blog 1/11/10
Hector Uribe may be my favorite candidate for this cycle
by Charles Kuffner.

Anyone who can send out a press release like this is someone who can make the election season just a little more enjoyable.

In Stunning Move, Land Commissioner Candidate Hector Uribe Already up on Statewide TV

(Austin) Democratic candidate for Texas Land Commissioner Hector Uribe announced today that he’s already on TV state-wide, when the USA cable network aired “No Country For Old Men” on January 6, and twice during their programming yesterday. Uribe had a speaking role in the film, which garnered four Academy Awards…for other actors. Uribe, for his part, managed to become one of only a few actors in the film to achieve the vaulted status of not being violently murdered by the end of it.

This surprise move makes Uribe the first candidate for Land Commissioner to be up on TV state-wide this election season.
