Legal Center & CREW Urge DOJ to Investigate Allegations of Public Corruption Against Texas Legislator/Political Consultant and Election Official

Today the Campaign Legal Center and Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) requested a full investigation of a series of allegations of public corruption and possible violations of the Voting Rights Act by a Texas State Representative and a local election official. In a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder, J. Gerald Hebert of the Legal Center and Melanie Sloane of CREW outlined the allegations against Representative Dwayne Bohac (District 138) and Harris County elections office employee Ed Johnson. The letter emphasized that the known facts "strongly suggest public corruption in Texas and in Harris County, but may also include violations of the Voting Rights Act and other federal laws."

"The evidence indicates Mr. Bohac and others conspired to interfere with voting rights in violation of the law," said CREW's Melanie Sloan. "Because our democracy depends on free and fair elections, the Department of Justice should investigate."

"The facts speak for themselves and when there is such a clear conflict of interest for local prosecutors, the Department of Justice must step in to see that the laws on the books are enforced," said J. Gerald Hebert of the Legal Center. "We hope that DOJ will thoroughly investigate the facts in question in order to safeguard the process and to restore public confidence that elections are conducted freely and fairly."

Nonpartisan Watchdog Groups Urge
DOJ to Investigate Bohac
Lone Star Project research provides basis for DOJ complaint

Today nationally respected ethics watchdog groups, Campaign Legal Center and Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW), submitted a formal request to the US Department of Justice asking for an investigation into the activities of Republican Texas State House Member, Dwayne Bohac (HD138 – Houston). Over the last several months, The Lone Star Project has exposed a series of corrupt activities by Bohac, his business partner Ed Johnson, and Republican Tax Assessor Collector Leo Vasquez.

Documents obtained by the Lone Star Project reveal that Bohac was part of a corrupt enterprise within the Harris County Voter Registrar's office in which his employee, Ed Johnson, also worked as an associate voter registrar and participated in disqualifying nearly 70,000 voter registration applications and personally reviewing at least 7,000 provisional ballot affidavits. The scheme is the subject of a pending federal lawsuit.

Ah the continuing saga of the The Harris Voter Registration Scandal of 2009. Looks like it just kicked up a notch.

1. Bohac tries to divert attention by using the word "ACORN"

Two Non-Partisan, Watchdog Groups Urge DOJ to Investigate Dwayne Bohac

(snip)
In response to the filing, Dwayne Bohac's consultant, Jason Smith, told Quorum Report,"This is a phony out-of-state front group with a phony name. It's all political and being orchestrated by the ACORN cover up by the national Democrat party."

If Smith had simply googled the organizations he would realize these are two legitimate, non-parisan groups and have nothing to do with the partisan political spew being flung.

As Quorum Report notes, CLC lists donors including The Pew Charitable Trusts, The Carnegie Corporation of New York and the Rockefeller Family Foundation. On the other hand CREW website has its annual list of the "Fifteen Most Corrupt Members of Congress" which includes eight Democrats and seven Republicans.

I hope DOJ picks up on this soon.

I believe that a spell was cast on the unsuspecting inhabitants of H-town. The spell was cast by the prior evil wizard - Saruman. Bohac and Johnson are just two of the many orcs that serve that master. :)
