DPS computer system has a virus
The Blotter AAS blog 4/15/09
Want a first-time driver’s license? Not possible today, so far

Texas Department of Public Safety officials said a virus that has entered the agency’s computer system is making it impossible for workers to issue first-time driver’s licenses at offices across the state.

DPS spokeswoman Lisa Block said officials are still trying to determine the origin of the virus. She said she did not know when the system would be operating again but that they were hoping to repair it today.

“We regret any inconvenience that this is causing people,” she said. “But we are working to fix it.”

These things never happen on secure government equipment like voting systems, right?

2. Will DHS list me as a Terrorist if I say that's hilarious?
By "Fix it", I assume she means the blame for this incident...

3. Maybe the DPS computers were teabagged
It is teabagging day right? First place I would look for a virus culprit is those tea party people.

5. Gives you a lot of confidence, doesn't it?
Like I said about the system security where my wife used to work
"I could crap a better security system than this"
They were so concerned about client file security that you had to log on every 10 minutes or the system would freeze you out. I had no problem accessing the file system from the outside using her user ID and password and it didn't lock me out after 10 minutes when accessing from outside their intranet

7. DPS has worms

DPS network infected by "Conficker" worm

A Texas Department of Public Safety computer network that primarily handles administrative functions, including e-mail and payroll, has been hit by a variation of the notorious Conficker computer virus, officials said Friday.

Officials had been trying since Wednesday, when some computers first showed symptoms, to identify the cause of the problems and will work through the weekend to restore service, DPS spokeswoman Tela Mange said.

The virus is effecting the DPS North Austin headquarters, as well as satellite offices across the state, officials said. About 2,000 troopers who patrol Texas highways also were unable to send messages from their in-car computers.

9. I'm thinking heartworm pills
But you watch, some brilliant thinker will suggest it should be privatized. Sure let's out source it.
