Houston's Art Car Parade today
Mrs. Dittie insists on going this year (and taking the dog).

(Waltrip High School's "Fandango: Little Ol' Car from Texas", from last year)

So we'll park downtown, probably at the Aquarium to avoid some of the hassle, and walk over to Bagby and Allen Parkway or thereabouts to observe. Anybody else coming/wish to rendezvous? We're going to find someplace to eat that will be OK with the puppy beforehand.

1. Well that sounds like fun!
I worked voter registration today for Obama's May 10 - Vote For Change Kickoff and Voter Reg Drive.

The Art Car Parade in Houston would have been a great location to do voter registration. Did the Houston Obama crew have anyone out doing voter registration during the parade?

2. Yes they did
I visited briefly with them as hey came through where we were.

And boy, was it hot out there today watching those 280 cars and thousands of fabulous furry freaky people associated with them.

3. Great for them
Here are two outstanding diaries on Daily Kos about the reg drives in Austin and NY where they had 1,400 people sign up to be voter registrars.

Photoblog: Obama Voter Registration in Austin!

VOTE for CHANGE -- 1,400 New Yorkers take to the streets!

Wonderful pictures all over those two diaries. Makes you proud of America! :patriot:

4. I missed it this year
I worked the bond election for Montgomery County. If you ever see the email come around of the big red high-heel pump car, the (at-the time) young woman in the hat with the red blouse and black shorts (with really ugly knees) is me. I've missed the parade for the last few years. It's my favorite parade except for the Irish Channel Parade on St. Paddy's Day in N.O.

5. Very sad news on Tom Jones of Art Car Museum
AAS 5/12/08
Houston's Art Car curator dies in post-parade accident

HOUSTON — Houston police have arrested a driver after a wreck in which the curator of the famed Art Car Museum was struck -- and later died.

Authorities say the accident that killed 51-year-old Tom Jones happened just hours after the 21st annual design-and-decorate-a-crazy-car parade had ended.

Officials say Jones had been sitting with a couple of friends outside the museum when a vehicle early yesterday hit a parked car and then smashed into them.

My condolences to the Jones family. This is very tragic. May Tom Jones rest in peace.

It's just so sad. I heard the driver was drunk.

7. We took our 2 small kids & stayed for an hour of it -
our 2 year old little boy loves cars & his eyes were so wide! The peace van was my favorite :) but as far as artistic I loved the rooster as well. It's our 5th year in Houston & first year attending. I don't think we'll miss it again, but we'll prepare next time w/tailgate supplies!
