2. Don't know nuttin about Juan
except what's on his site. It'd be nice if he offered up his position on some issues and I suppose he's a Dem but don't see that on his site either. So really, I still don't know nuttin about Juan.

4. He's got that whole manly flightsuit look down though

Useful if he ever needs to claim premature victory in some future war.

6. What party does he represent?
Edited on Tue May-03-05 08:08 AM by PDittie
You'd think he'd want to indicate that somewhere on his all-of-three-pages website....

Like you, TP, why someone would want to run for the Senate as anonymously as possible is more than a little odd (and frankly annoying).

And what is this purpose of this photograph?

To verify his heterosexuality (since everyone knows a wife and three sons isn't enough proof)? To counteract the inherent Dubya-like gayness of the other flight suit photos (he's exposing his tongue?!? Yeah, that's a quality I'm looking for in my next Senator ... moist lips)? Are they recasting "Officer and a Gentleman"?

He probably paid someone a large fee to design this website.

Sheesh, what is going on in peoples' minds ...

I think it puts a much needed face on the military. They have people at home who care and love them and want them home!!!

And pictures of him in uniform are not different than if he was a school teacher and the pictures were of him standing in front of a chalkboard. These pictures are who he is and it's a damn shame that that makes Dems skeptical.

We have to stop allowing the repukes to frame us. All the better that we have Democrats who served and can come at the issues of war and peace with the experience and without apology.

Are we going to say the government needs to not hide the caskets coming home? Are we going to go to the memorial service to read and hear the names of the military who died in Iraq? And then, are we going to make snarky remarks when of them runs as a Dem with pictures on his website that show it?

Mary

15. Maybe I was too harsh
I'd still like to hear his stands on the issues before I decide whether or not to support him.

7. Hey he could be one of ours
This bit from his bio makes me think he's not a repuke

While practicing law, Garcia chairs the Board of Citizens for Educational Excellence, serves on the Board of Governors for Leadership Corpus Christi, the Corpus Christi Barrios Association, the Surfrider Environmental Group, is a certified legal volunteer at the Corpus Christi Women's Shelter, and an on-air host for the area's PBS television affiliate.

That just doesn't sound repuke to me. Wow this guy could be a winner.
Tough looking, military, Hispanic maybe conservative but by Democrat terms a "moderate".

I signed up too.

8. He's a Dem
I was speaking with someone in the Texas party back in December & she mentioned they were looking at running him for the Senate. Don't know much more than that about him, but I can ask my friends in Corpus if they've heard of him.

9. BOR (Andrew D) has this:
Another pleasant experience was meeting the man who I have bestowed the sobriquet "Gov" on- Lt. Cmdr. Juan M. Garica (USN-Ret.) of Corpus Christi. Sounds great, right? A Military guy. But his resume only begins there. LCDR Garcia is also a graduate of UCLA, Harvard Law and the Kennedy School of Government. In terms of charisma he is second only to John Edwards in people I have met. He had ladies (and some of the guys) turning their heads and the rest of the guys (and all the ladies) ready to open their wallets. His family is great too- his beautiful wife Danielle came with him, though they left their 4 kids (straight out of a commercial cute) in Corpus. He is also bilingual. Garcia was approached by the Republican Party to run for office, but made it clear that he was not on their side and is now planning to take on Republican State Rep. Gene Seaman in 2006. Keep your eye on this guy- he is going places. The Latino John Kennedy I called him.

Found via Kuffner just now.

12. Hmmmm....
like the sound of that!

Probably going with the anonymity to see if he can pick up any disgusted cons who don't yet know who to vote for, but may have heard his name tossed around.

He probably figures Dems will find out on our own that he's in the race and what he believes in. Looks like he was right!

11. I've been looking at him, too........
I picked up a bit of info on TexasKos and he's definitely a Dem.

I've heard there's a heavy hitter or two who will be announcing for the senate. If so, his chances are probably slim, but I signed up for his newsletter. The bio looks A-1, but I want to know where he stands on the issues.

I haven't joined the big local excitement over Barbara Radnofsky. I very much looking for a candidate.

16. On May 4, Harvey Kronberg's Quorum Report wrote:
A new Web site has sprung up saying Garcia for Texas and the U.S. Senate in 2006.

The site, www.garciafortexas.com, says Juan M. Garcia III offers a "new face, tested leadership and Texas values." Trouble is, the site, which has been up for a week, has no party identification and no contact phone number.

http://www.quorumreport.com/buzz/buzz.cfm (scroll down to May 4, 7:12 pm)

Clicking on it just now, Garcia's website says the following:

"The site is temporarily down for routine maintenance and will be back up shortly."

18. The Corpus Christi newspaper discussed the website this weekend
Here is an excerpt:

The Quorum Report mentioned the most recent Web site and quoted Austin-based consultant Jeff Hewitt as saying the site looked like a "draft Juan campaign." "I'm not even sure Juan knows who's behind it," Hewitt told The Quorum Report. "I don't think Juan has made a decision."

In an e-mail to the CallerTimes, Garcia did not distance himself from the Web site.

"We met with folks from Austin, Dallas, and D.C. who made a compelling case for running for the U.S. Senate," he wrote "Some friends hung a very rudimentary Web site up earlier this week, really just to gauge interest, and from there things have taken off.

"Of course I'm interested in continuing to serve our country, and am obligated to think through an opportunity like this. But we also recognize it's a momentous undertaking, particularly in a state the size of ours. I'm discussing it with family and friends."

19. Reading the post above about the 14th CD
I'm wondering if Garcia might actually live in the 14th CD.

Since it looks like there may be several NAMES stepping into the Senate race, depending on if KBH runs for gov. The 14th CD might be the place for Garcia.

20. I have heard Garcia's name mentioned in connection with several races
1. Corpus Christi City Counsel
2. Corpus Christi Mayor
3. Texas State Representative 32
4. Congressional District 27

This talk makes me think that he must not live in Congressional District 14.

21. Well, I'd discount the 27th
I doubt Solomon Ortiz is planning to step down and challenging him in a primary wouldn't be a good first step.

Well, we DO need someone in the 14th and I haven't heard anyone mentioned. Maybe the earlier topic about the 14th will give us some buzz.

22. I agree that Ortiz isn't likely to step down and I also agree that Garcia
could start out more auspiciously by selecting a run against someone other than a long time Democratic incumbent but I hear rumblings from some Corpus Christi Democrats who wish Ortiz would vote with the Democrats more often and with the Republicans less often (his vote for the bankruptcy bill, for example, was a travesty given that he is supposed to be representing a constituency who will be disproportionately harmed by the bill).
