http://www.wistv.com/Global/story.asp?S=1813446&nav=0RaPMaCm(Columbia-AP) April 26, 2004 - Some activists are angry that lawmakers plan to include a group that opposes gay marriage on a panel studying whether unmarried couples can adopt children.
The Palmetto Family Council is the only private group so far given a position on a committee studying the bill to bar unmarried couples from adopting children or becoming foster parents. The conservative Christian group is a nonprofit organization that advocates for traditional families.
Johanna Haynes of the South Carolina Equality Coalition says a main opposition group to gay adoption shouldn't be on the committee. Haynes hopes her organization gets a seat, too.
The bill's sponsor, Greenville Senator Mike Fair, says he would consider removing the Palmetto Family Council, but Fair says he's not sure he wants a gay and lesbian group on the panel.
