Independent stance could help Tenenbaum
LEE BANDY

The Kerry-Edwards campaign will have a visible presence in South Carolina for the 2004 presidential election, much to the chagrin of state and local politicians who must run on the Democratic ticket with the duo.

The conventional wisdom is that local Democrats must distance themselves from their presidential ticket and the national party if they are to have any chance of winning in November.

No one knows that better than Democrat Inez Tenenbaum, who is vying to succeed U.S. Sen. Ernest "Fritz" Hollings, D-S.C.

With an eye on swing voters - those who don't identify with either party but who normally decide elections - Tenenbaum has staked out an independent, middle-of-the-road course for her campaign.
