i have contacted the local DFA group in the hopes of organizing a sign campaign. unfortunately, i have no resources but a lot of ideas, including a web site, bumper stickers and...

erecting 4'X 8' signs in high visibility locations in communities around allegheny county saying something like -

SENATOR SANTORUM
DON'T MOVE HERE
WE CAN'T AFFORD YOU

we need to act now. we can't wait until 2006 to start our campaign against santorum. strike while the iron is hot!

if anyone in the pittsburg area is interested in this please contact me at [email protected] Ed Dobson

1. PG does story - some new tidbits - someone lives in home
but not a Santorum.

This house at 111 Stephens Lane in Penn Hills is owned by U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum.

http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/04319/411623.stm

The Penn Hills School District, which is paying about $38,000 a year for five of U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum's children to attend a cyber charter school, is looking into whether the Republican senator resides in the district.

School board member Erin Vecchio, who is chair of the Democratic party in Penn Hills and lives near a two-bedroom house owned by the Santorums, said, "I live right down the street from the man. He's never there. ... He doesn't live here."

She thinks the district shouldn't have to pay for the Santorum children to attend the Western Pennsylvania Cyber Charter School. It is based in Midland but serves more than 3,100 pupils from nearly 400 school districts statewide who attend via computer.

Under state law, the district in which the pupil resides must pay for each resident who attends a charter school. While the fee varies by district, Penn Hills must pay $7,551 for each pupil.

<snip>

The Santorums use the Penn Hills address for voter registration as do two other people, Bart and Alyssa DeLuca, both 25, according to Allegheny County records.

4. Does Santorum Meet Residency Requirements to be Senator?
I'm more interested in whether Santorum meets residency requirements to be a PA. Senator. If he only has one small residence, which is occupied by 2 non-relatives, then where is his PA. residence?

Allentown (PA) Morning Call Editorial

http://www.mcall.com/news/opinion/all-editorial2nov16,0,5294825.story?coll=all-newsopinion-hed

Elected officials deserve to keep their families behind a wall of privacy, at least most of the time. Sometimes, however, office holders make decisions regarding families that overlap with public policy. Sometimes, the pertinent public policy is bad policy. Just this unfolded last week regarding U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum.

<snip>

It may bother some people that one of Pennsylvania's senators doesn't live here, hasn't lived here since 1995, in fact. His staff does maintain eight offices here, including one in Allentown, and a spokeswoman said Mr. Santorum visits all 67 Pennsylvania counties yearly. And, there is nothing illegal about the dual residences. Lots of members of Congress do it that way, particularly those who come from states that are far away.

It may also bother people that a family with income based on the annual senate salary of $150,000 asks taxpayers to pay for what amounts to homeschooling.

<snip>

Whether such an arrangement amounts to good education is up to individual families, of course. But in the case of the Santorums, the residency part plus the public funding part add up to a situation that doesn't pass the old ''sit well'' test. It just doesn't sit well with our sense of public service that the Senator chooses to avail himself of this option.

11/16/04 - Rooney Demands Refund For Santorum's Cyber School Costs

PA Dem Chair Says Santorum “Robbing Pennsylvania Students” for Personal Gain

HARRISBURG, PA: After days of news reports detailing how Senator Rick Santorum has taken $100,000 in Pennsylvania taxpayer dollars for cyber-schooling his children, Rep. T.J. Rooney, Chair of the Pennsylvania Democratic Party, today called on Santorum to refund Pennsylvania's children the taxpayer dollars he has taken from their education to put towards the education of his own children.

Santorum and his family live in Virginia.

Rooney said today, “Senator Santorum keeps going around trumpeting family values, trying to convince citizens that he is the voice for the Pennsylvania family. Now we learn that apparently Mr. Santorum believes that family values means taking from the children who need our help to pay huge bills for his own family, even though they don't live in Pennsylvania.”

According to the Associated Press, the Penn Hills School District in suburban Pittsburgh has spent $100,000 on the Internet-based education of Santorum's children since 2001-2002. Santorum purchased his two bedroom residence in the school district in 1997 for $87,800. His Leesburg, Virginia home was assessed at $757,000 this year.

“This is a classic case of the rich man's Robin Hood,” Rooney followed. “Mr. Santorum makes a generous salary and lives in a very expensive home in Virginia, but he didn't let that stop him from unfairly taking from the Pennsylvania students who need those school funds desperately.”
