Radio Lady; I'm going to offer Steve Novick (Dem. candidate for Senate) some radio time.

http://www.novickforsenate.org

Steve Novick (D) is challenging incumbent Sen. Gordon Smith (R) for the U.S. senate seat from the state of Oregon. Our other senator, Ron Wyden (D) is not affected this year. Our Oregon primary is very late -- May 20th. I am going to contact Mr. Novick's office to see what his schedule will be after my vacation ends on March 14th.

Do you have any questions you'd like to pose to him?

Moderators: Can you please keep this discussion LIVE (DO NOT ARCHIVE) until the undetermined date of this interview?

Cordially,

Radio Lady Ellen Kimball/Oregon Public Broadcasting/Portland, OR

1. Here are a few:
Do you support a continued U.S. military presence in the middle east?

Will you vote to renew NCLB?

Where do you stand on high-stakes testing?

Will you vote to repeal the Patriot Act?

Have you ever taken, and would you ever take, campaign contributions from Monsanto?

Will you work to support universal, single-payer, not-for-profit health care?

Will you work to repeal NAFTA/CAFTA?

2. Hi Lwolf. Good job! Thanks for these suggestions.
I'm going to print them and keep them until I find out if Steve Novick will be willing to be interviewed on OPB's Accessible Information Network.

I'll keep you posted.

Cordially,

Radio Lady/Ellen Kimball, Oregon Public Broadcasting, Portland, OR

3. Great, I'll look for updates.
I really am curious to hear what Novick, and the other two (that I know about) have to say. I think we've got a good opportunity to unseat Smith, so this is one race that really has my attention!

5. LWolf, I took the liberty of looking at your journal. I am impressed with your writing.

You're on my Buddy List so I can at least find you again.

As a former TV personality and radio talk show host by background, and a media junkie as well since I was four years old, I have found many of the current news and talk hosts extremely annoying at times. It is at those times that I check out KMHD 89.1 FM for jazz and alternative music, KBPS 89.9 FM for classical music, or one of the soft rock stations up the the other end of the FM dial. When all else fails, I turn to my CD collection of eclectic music and sound.

My grandkids like Disney radio AM 1640 -- it's pre-set on my car radio. The parts I've heard are pretty imaginative.

Cordially,

Radio Lady Ellen

6. I'm glad to hear about the Disney station.
I know they have one, but I wasn't sure where it was. My grandson sings his way to school and back every day, and likes to listen to the same CD for weeks at a time. ;)

I also do listen to NPR. My alarm clock is set to NPR in the morning, and it's the radio station I have pre-set in the car.

7. Have you heard "Think Out Loud" on KOPB-FM?
By the way, on February 20, 2008, a manager with OPB told me I was no longer needed as a radio reading volunteer. Long story... not too interesting to the public but handled with little finesse, IMHO. Two other women also received the same news last year.

It remains to be seen if the SAP (Secondary Audio Programming) channel will be replaced by anything else.

My newest assignment is with KGW.com as a movie reviewer. This is also a volunteer affiliation.

Cordially,

Radio Lady in Oregon (but really in Hawaii on Kauii this morning...)

8. UPDATE: Oregon Public Broadcasting pulled the plug on SAP radio.
Edited on Tue Apr-15-08 10:00 PM by Radio_Lady
The Accessible Information Network (formerly "Golden Hours") which served the blind, homebound, disabled and senior citizens since 1975, will be off the air by the end of April. There are separate plans to keep it on the Internet. However, these plans are not finalized at this time.

For your information, SAP (Second Audio Programming) will be gone completely from all VHF TV stations around the nation on February 19, 2009, as part of the national move to digital transmission. Management at OPB elected to dump it earlier. Sadly, the staff members there were not offered other comparable positions.

There are 100 or so volunteers who find themselves "encouraged to volunteer in other ways" by the VP of Marketing and Planning Tara Taylor. I appreciate the chance to work with them for more than seven years on pledge drives, as well as four years with Audience Services, and the rest of the time with a one-hour talk show each week on AIN.

For the interim, I have a new relationship with the website at www.KGW.com -- just for movie reviews at this time, but there will be a ramp-up to book previewing when possible.

Also, I will be fulfilling my dream to work with animals again. In my youth, I took care of a mare and a stallion for some neighbors in rural North Miami, Florida. As a teenager, I raised and trained my Boston Terrier "Duchess of Dade" and competed in obedience trials. "Dolly" earned her Companion Dog degree, and then I bred her to one of the champions of the breed. She produced seven male puppies, and did not require a Caesarian section as most of the dams of that breed do. We ended up with our pictures in a book on Boston Terriers.

When I lived in New York, I had my own business as a dog trainer whenever things got too tough in the world of media. This is a bit off-topic, but I was able to work right up to the birth of my daughter in October 1968, one of the first children delivered by the Lamaze method of "prepared childbirth." Later, I had my son by the same method in Mercy Hospital in Miami, a Catholic teaching hospital where I was pleased to have the cooperation of an obstetrician who had never seen a prepared delivery. My son had the umbilical cord wrapped around his neck, which made it a high-risk delivery. I was glad I was awake for these births. I just want to thank Elizabeth Bing and all the pioneers who taught me the breathing techniques. I had virtually no anesthesia during the birth of either child.

So, ultimately, I am paying it forward. Last Saturday, I signed up with www.forwardstride.org to get me out of offices and studios and into the world of horses and the outdoors. I'm thrilled with this new connection. This group, formerly known as Agape, and located in Sherwood, just moved to just 2.7 miles from our Beaverton home over winter break. There are 27 horses on 60 acres. It is beautiful and improving every day. They took over the old Fox Hollow stables, if you remember that at all.

How fortunate I am to be able to help those who need this recreational therapy!

Thanks for your patience and understanding.

9. Don't you have to offer the (R) incumbent equal time?

11. Hi Richardo -- Here's the answer to your post.
See this link in my journal:

http://journals.democraticunderground.com/Radio_Lady/237

Right now, I am reassessing my broadcasting options while volunteering for KGW.com .

Regarding your question, I was told that the "fairness doctrine" is not supported by the FCC anymore. You don't have to provide equal time to politicians; besides, this offer was for the primary election, which will be held on May 20th. I never got to record or air this program.

Cordially,

Radio Lady in Oregon
