Some background on Sherrod Brown's decision to run for the Senate...
First of all, the congressional seat that is now occupied by Brown was considered relatively safe, even though it encompasses several central Ohio Rural Counties....

Second, Safe but only if Brown ran for reelection.....

Third, the strongest GOP candidate, State Senator Jeffry Armbruster, has been tainted by his business bankruptcy and is now considered, for the time being, damaged goods....

Fourth, former House Member Tom Sawyer, lives in Brown's district and would likely beat anyone challenging him for the nomination....

So the seat becomes, not a shoo in, but a good bet for the Dem's to keep ...

This is how people involved with politics think....

They look at all angles and try to come up with the best one...

Please don't take this or any of my other posts as being anti Hackett....

I just know Sherrod, I know that he will represent me as a progressive democrat in congress....

But if Hackett wins, I will work just as hard to get him elected as I would have if Sherrod had won....

I hope all the Hackett supporters here feel the same way....

Attorney staying in race to replace DeWine in Senate
Saturday, October 15, 2005

...Brown responded that he wasn't surprised by Hackett's decision. "I plan to win the primary," he said. "This race is about Mike DeWine and beating Mike DeWine. . . . I'm the candidate who can beat Mike DeWine."...

Brown said Friday that he's not concerned about Hackett's decision because he has prevailed in primaries before and believes he's better prepared to serve in the Senate. He said Democrats statewide are familiar with his efforts to strengthen the party, lower the cost of prescription drugs and defeat free-trade pacts.

"I've worked to build the party. I've won two statewide races. I know the state well," said Brown. "When I'm elected, I'll be ready to serve as a U.S. senator and not have to learn the ropes and learn all these issues."

Sherrod Brown
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Sherrod BrownSherrod Brown (born November 9, 1952), of Lorain, Ohio is an American politician who serves as a U.S. representative from the Democratic party, representing the 13th congressional district of Ohio (map).

Brown was born in Mansfield, Ohio. He received a bachelor of arts degree in Russian studies from Yale University (New Haven, Connecticut) in 1974 and a master of arts degree in education and public administration from Ohio State University (Columbus, Ohio) in 1981. He taught at the Mansfield branch campus of Ohio State University from 1979 to 1981.

Career in politics
Brown served as an Ohio state representative from 1975 to 1982. He was one of the youngest state representatives in Ohio history, and supposedly, shortly after taking office, he was mistaken for an intern and asked to fetch coffee by a staffer. In 1982, he won a four-way Democratic primary that included Dennis Kucinich, now a Cleveland Congressman, then defeated Republican Virgil E. Brown in the general election for the office of Ohio Secretary of State, succeeding Anthony J. Celebrezze Jr.. In 1986, Brown won re-election as secretary of state, defeating Vincent C. Campanella. In 1990, Brown lost when trying for a third term as secretary of state to Republican Bob Taft.

In 1992, Brown ran for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives and won. He began serving in 1993 (103rd Congress)...

Who will take over for Brown?

Prospective candidates are lining up to at least express an interest in running for the 13th Congressional District seat that U.S. Rep. Sherrod Brown, D-Avon, will give up to run against Republican Michael DeWine in the 2006 election.

But how deep their interest runs remains to be seen.

So far, Democratic hopefuls appear more interested in the seat than their Republican counterparts. Lorain County Republican Chairman Robert Rousseau said yesterday that no one has approached him to express interest in running for the seat.

The 13th District seat has been held exclusively by Democrats for nearly 30 years...

5. Little Capri Cafaro should move to the 13th and make a run for it
She could not defeat Latourette after she moved to Hunting Valley to run against the incumbent republican in 2004. A game plan redux of a big money primary race with a handful of labor endorsements could win her the nomination. Then she could proceed to an easy win in the general election.

6. What about Mark Dann?
Somehow I can't see Capri Cafaro helping the reputation of Ohio. I know looks should never matter, but she doesn't make a very professional appearance. (That will be my huge understatement of the day.)

What about State Senator Mark Dann? He lives near that area and has been a real leader in the Worker's Comp. scandal.

7. Dann would be running outside of the Mahoning Valley
if he ran in Sherrod Brown's 13th district. So I doubt it. I like Dann's act. He gets some good stories on Cle Public Radio.

8. If it failed before why repeat it?
Relying on labor support and money won't get the job done.

13. If you could give her advice, what would you say?
I was "less than overwhelmed" by her campaign. If she were to make another run of it in the 14th district, what should she do better? BTW, her million-dollar-plus campaign budget was mostly money she inherited from her billionaire-developer grandfather.

14. She can't beat Latorette.....
He is pretty much unbeatable now that he has been there so long...

She doesn't really stand a chance, I don't think, with all the baggage she brought into the campaign...

She got caught lying and fabricating stuff about Latorette.. Didn't she....

They gave her a free pass cause no one else wanted to run against him....

15. There were 5 candidates & we were shocked when she beat Ed Jerse
...who was endorsed by the Lake County Democratic Party by a decisive margin. I think her connections and having to testify in her father's "influence peddling" suit was a big liability. I am trying to think about what she made up about Latourette.

If Cafaro could not beat Leavin' Steven during the year his wife divorced him for adultery with a young 'un, I don't see what chance she has next year.

He is a good man....

Stands on his convictions....

I admire that....

2. Hackett is a 'go' for Senate after close race for Congress
Edited on Sat Oct-15-05 09:47 AM by Algorem

By Howard Wilkinson
Enquirer staff writer

Paul Hackett, who stunned the political world with his near-miss in the 2nd Congressional District race this summer, said Friday he is in the U.S. Senate race to stay, even if it means a tough Democratic primary battle next spring.

"It's going to be a long, hard fight, but I am in it for good,'' Hackett told The Enquirer.

The Indian Hill lawyer and Iraq war veteran wants the U.S. Senate seat now held by Republican Mike DeWine.

Hackett was virtually unknown in politics last spring when he decided to run for the 2nd District seat vacated when former U.S. Rep. Rob Portman was named U.S. trade representative...

Paul Hackett
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Paul Lewis Hackett III (born March 30, 1962) is a trial lawyer and veteran of the Iraq War who unsuccessfully sought election to the United States Congress from the Second District of Ohio (map) in the August 2, 2005, special election. Hackett, a Democrat, narrowly lost to Republican Jean Schmidt, a former member of the Ohio House of Representatives, providing the best showing in the usually solidly Republican district by any Democrat since the 1974 election. Hackett's strong campaign attracted national attention and substantial expenditures by both parties and was viewed by some observers as the first round of the 2006 elections. In October 2005, Hackett said he would seek the Democratic nomination in 2006 to challenge incubment United States Senator Mike DeWine.

Paul Hackett, his wife, Suzanne, and their three children.Hackett, who The New York Times said was six foot four and "garrulous, profane, and quick with a barked retort or a mischievous joke" was born in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of Paul and Beth Hackett, who lived at the time in Gates Mills. When an infant, his family moved to West Palm Beach, Florida, where his father worked for the Pratt and Whitney aircraft engine company. Before Hackett started school, his family returned to Ohio when his father took a job with the General Electric Company's aircraft engine division in Evendale, a Cincinnati suburb. Hackett lived in Wyoming, Montgomery, and Indian Hill and attended the Seven Hills School and Indian Hill High School.

He has a B.A. from Case Western Reserve University and a J.D. from Cleveland State University Marshall College of Law at Cleveland State University. Hackett also attended American University in Washington, DC from January 1983 to May 1983, studying under the university's Washington Semester program in Journalism. Hackett was admitted to the Ohio bar on November 7, 1988 and practices law in downtown Cincinnati with the Hackett Law Office, which he opened in 1994.

Hackett is a Marine. He saw active duty in the Corps from 1989 to 1992, and then joined the Select Marine Corps Reserve. In 2004, he volunteered for active duty in the Iraq War, spending seven months as a civil affairs officer with the 4th Civil Affairs Group of the 1st Marine Division. He was assigned to Ramadi and supported the Fallujah campaign and reconstruction efforts there. On 12 October 2004, a convoy under his command was hit by two roadside bombs, but Hackett was uninjured. He returned to Ohio in early 2005...

3. Sawyer lives in Ryan's district (the 17th)
Tom Sawyer lives in the 17th Congressional District, which is occupied by Tim Ryan, who beat Sawyer in the 2002 primary. The newly redrawn district was 1/3 of what Sawyer had before. Sawyer still lives at the same place. Whether he moves into the 13th, I do not know.

4. I think they drew the district in order to eliminate Sawyer..
Remember, you do not have to live in the district in order to run in the district...

I believe he lives in the 13th... I'm just going from what my guy in the GOP party tells me... And by the newspaper...

He had a choice to run against Sherrod or try for the new seat which, BTW, the GOP thought would be a more up for grabs type of district than it turned out to be....

9. Sawyer is a great person
Also a very good Congressperson who was repeatedly and unfairly attacked by local Akron area union thugs who never forgave him for supporting NAFTA.

If the 13th District is to stay a Dem seat, the unions will have to become part of the team on helping fill the seat instead of trying to run the show themselves. Their judgement is poor and their loyalty to the Dem party very questionable.
