Buckeyes: have you seen any Kerry/Edwards bumper stickers?
On a recent trip from Dayton to Sandusky, I spotted 3 for BC and none for our good guys.

Hopefully, this is because we're just now receiving our supplies.

Have YOU seen stickers or signs where you live in Ohio?

Visibility is a big issue; undecided voters need to SEE support for Kerry/Edwards. Four years ago there were NO Dem signs on the street where I live; currently, I've had requests from THREE neighbors for yard signs!

(Local zoning laws may prohibit displaying yard signs prior to 30-days before the election, but if you've seen any of those, let us know.)

1. The new stuff is just coming in -
Dem HQ in Cincy called a few days ago to say that they had the new stuff with Edwards on it now. Don't know if bumper stickers were included.

2. I've seen a half-dozen Kerry-only stickers
Here in Kettering, mostly in parking lots at Kroger and Trader Joe's. When we went down to Cincinnati for the Reds' game last Saturday, we counted about a dozen anti-Bush and/or pro-Kerry stickers on Ohio cars going south on I-75 (although I didn't see any Kerry/Edwards stickers), and only maybe five or six pro-Bush ones. Now you mention it, maybe it is about supply -- I haven't seen any post-VP selection campaign bumperstickers yet.

I have concerns about putting any political stickers on my private vehicle, because of my job (I've noticed nobody else who works for the organization puts any on their cars either way, and the organization itself isn't political and seems determined to stay that way, so it seems to be an unspoken sort of truce). Someone suggested mounting it on a magnet, but I've got a brain like a sieve, and my immediate boss is a big ol' FReeper type.

Mr. Nownow wants to put a Kerry/Edwards on his car, though, and probably will soon. He's still got a 'Dean For America' sticker he put on it a year ago, nobody's said anything to him where he works, and he's seen other stickers in the parking lot, so he figures he'd be okay at work with it.

He's mentioned getting a yard sign, but the little creeps in our neighborhood already egg our cars and smash off the rearview mirrors -- I don't know what level of vandalism I'm willing to stomach yet. I'm sure it would invite some -- I pass a house every day on my way to work that had a Kerry sign up a couple of weeks ago. Every day, it looked a little the worse for wear, and every day they moved it a little closer to the front of their house, until finally they took it down altogether.

Only one yard sign in my immediate neighborhood, here, and it's a Bush one. Our neighbors directly across the back yard have it. I've told the Mr. I want to get a big Kerry/Edwards sign and put it on the back of our house, just so every time one of them looks out the back window, it ticks them off, whether I get up the nerve to put one in the front yard or not. Nobody on my street has anything -- maybe the Republicans (and I know there are a couple, because they had Taft signs last midterm) are just waiting for somebody else to get up the nerve, I don't know.

5. Hmm . . . a Shrub sign in your neighbor's yard?
I wonder if your zoning regulations allow yard signs so early in the game? You might want to give the City of Kettering a phone call.

Here in Washington Twp. the zoning folks told me they will REMOVE any signs that are displayed earlier than Oct. 2nd.

Kukesa,

Can you clarify the township zoning law on signs? Does the Oct. 2 rule for signs apply to both **both** private **and** public property?

Thanks!

41. Ohio Supreme Court decision
I believe an Ohio Supreme Court decision in the last few years nullified local ordinances that impose a date restriction on political signs. Municipalities can still impose reasonable, content-neutral size restrictions, but they cannot prohibit political signs or discriminate against political signs.

There are already Kerry and Bush signs scattered around Cincinnati. I expect many more to go up after Labor Day. That's the traditional sign kick-off around here.

42. Free speech
Edited on Wed Aug-18-04 08:53 AM by mosin
I would hasten to add that as a supporter of free speech, I find it offensive to suggest that another citizen's free speech should be limited because he happens to support an evil candidate.

Here is a link to the original Ohio case: http://www.sconet.state.oh.us/rod/documents/0/2000/2000-ohio-488.doc">Painesville Bldg. Dept. v. Dworken & Bernstein Co., L.P.A. (2000), 89 Ohio St.3d 564 (Word Document).

There have been subsequent cases, including one in Cincinnati that I can't find now. The ACLU has also been active in Ohio and nationally in opposing sign ordinances.

(Edited for grammar)

9. An update.
You should be hanging at Thirsty Dog, lady -- we saw three Kerry stickers in the lot there this evening, and one anti-Bush that wasn't affiliated with any of the candidates from the primaries or with Kerry/Edwards. Not only that, but I saw the second 'Mission (with mission crossed out) NOTHING Accomplished' sticker, next to a Kerry sticker, on a car in the lot at Kroger on the way home. I'm starting to think not all the Kerry voters are going to come from Youngstown, now!

10. That's encouraging, nownow.
There was a "meet up" for Kerry-Edwards at the Thirsty Dog last night. Actually, there were about 11 gatherings throughout the area and 131 folks were expected to attend. That's WAY up from the 5-or-so who attended earlier this year.

I was working the phone banks at Dem HQ last night. We HAVE NOT yet received our supply of bumper stickers/pins/signs.

Looks like we'll have to wait a while to spot more bumper stickers.

To Victory!

14. Columbus Fam has Kerry sign from get go
I live on the northwest side of Columbus, in a generally Republican city. I know that a neighbor of mine down our street has had a Kerry sign up probably for the last 9 months or so. That was the only sign on the street before two days ago. Then a BC sign went up. I looked at my husband and told him that we need to get our Kerry sign and maybe we should make a bigger sign that says GWB when did you sell your soul to the devil....opps I mean Dick Cheney. Well in any case
There have been alot of Kerry stickers in the cars and alot less BC ones.

But I imagine that it will be more interesting closer to November.

Glendale, an enclave of Cincinnati wealth, no less!!

There's also this great old house on Sharon Road leading into Glendale... they have flags they change every so often. During the march to war, they flew their UN Flag. I noticed Friday they're flying a DNC Donkey flag!

28. My son called last night and he lives in Hyde Park in Cincinnati
On Erie Road. Said the Kerry stickers are everywhere...he said he even saw one just yesterday on a Jaguar.

On that note, my son is 23, will turn 24 the day after the election...the reason he called me yesterday was to TELL me he and some friends had re-registered to vote in their area. Most of them voted at home during the last election, but you know kids, you move away from home, finish college, and your social life just does not allow time for "stuff" like changing your polling location due to address changes.. But these kids are fired up, and excited that their area appears to be favoring Kerry.

Anyone else get a sense of Cincinnati? I live in Fairfield County, it will go Republican, but I think it will be close.

29. Hyde Park?
Now, that's encouraging!

I live in a southern suburb of Dayton; we just received a supply of bumper stickers at Dem HQ, but I don't see many displayed.

Our yard signs came in yesterday and I'm hauling around 100 of them in my car; we ask for a $5 donation for each sign -- a friend of mine "up-fronted" the money for this first purchase (Dem HQ said they didn't have enough money to purchase them).

Met a man today who wanted to buy 2 MORE -- he had his first two stolen from his front yard.

A car with 6 "K-E" stickers had its tires slashed the other night. That is so sad -- and despicable, too.

To Victory!

Saw many 'W'04, I support Preznit Bush and the troops, B/C stickers' in the suburbs -- but many Kerry in the city (Walnut Hill, Mt. Adams)

I rode through with the Wes Wingmobile and my K/E magnet. Guy at the K/E HQ in Walnut Hill area gave me an Enron/Halliburton 04 which went in the window. :) Pissed a few people off, no doubt.

20. Yard sign.
I saw a neat sign in front of a high-end house in Columbus. It was simply a big piece of plywood painted black, and then someone had taken a brush and somewhat crudely wrote:

KERRY
2004

I think the homemade touch is pretty effective.

22. UA for Kerry
signs and bumper stickers are all over Upper Arlington, usually a very BIG Republican area. There have been some problem with people stealing yard signs and I suppose that will continue. We have a very active grass roots for Kerry group and they are getting all the signs and bumper stickers out there that they can. The local Republicans who think the area belongs to Bush are royally irritated that we use UA on our signs, but the attorney for the state Board of Elections says it is perfectly legal and a free speech issue.

Saw my first Kerry/Edwards lawn sign last week. So far the freepers have left it alone. Have seen a few K/E bumper stickers so far and a couple anti-shrub stickers.

In my part of Hamilton county we are heavily outnumbered by bushco supporters hence there are several B/C stickers and lawn signs, much more than K/E. Not very surprizing. I don't even think Hamilton County went Democratic in a presidential election even when FDR was beating Landon or Wilkie like a drum.

Yesterday I was stuck in traffic and behind a car with lots of B-C'04 stickers as well as the bumper sticker in my subject line and one that read "Liberals Suck."

The vehicle also sported "Vietnam Vet" license plates. It was scary.

Upside: at lunch, TWO SERVERS asked about my "Kerry/Edwards" pin. I happened to have extras and gave each of them a pin as well as info on how to volunteer. Both told me they registered to vote FOR THE FIRST TIME! Hallelujah!!

Car in front of me at gas station had a Nascar sticker in the back window. On the left rear bumper it had the freeper requsite sticker of God Bless America. But what to my wondering eyes did appear on the right side of the bumper........."Vote that son-of-a Bush out!".
I nearly lost the gas hose, I was laughing so hard. I wanted to give the driver a "right on", but he pulled away too quickly.

HOW was it decided that if we opposed the war we couldn't support our troops?

53. I Wonder
...if somehow this isn't a backdoor protest of the war, done without visibly taking political sides. With this "stop-loss" policy, troops coming home to no jobs, no benefits, etc... it could be a subtle way of voicing disapproval of the war by showing support of those who have to fight it. And I'm all for that.

Another theory: People are beginning to realize that we are in deep, with no foreseeable way out. So we had better support our troops, because soon they will be our own children (speaking as a mom whose oldest is just five years from draft age). Stop-loss can't continue forever, and it is rumored that they are ready to reactivate the lottery next year. (A vote for Bush in '04 is a vote for the draft in '05.) True, if Kerry is elected (WHEN Kerry is elected, pardon me) he may be faced with the same situation -- but I trust Kerry to deploy the military much more wisely than the current gang in the WH has done.

But I'm really curious about the popularity of these stickers all of a sudden. You would see one or two occasionally. But now they are all over. They look fairly expensive, too.

54. I saw a car with a "support the troops" ribbon and "John Kerry"
So maybe this "why do liberals hate America" message is not taking hold in America.

57. I saw a "support" ribbon and a JK sticker, too
Warren Rt.5 bypass near Niles.

Lotta John Kerry stickers around here.

The next time I see a Buxh sticker on a car, I got to do as Carville says, Pull up at a traffic light and yell over to him: "Hey...I thought you ought to know...Somebody put a Bush sticker on your bumper".

I saw three -- count 'em -- three Kerry stickers today. (Saw a lot more downtown, but then I was parked across the street from Dem HQ, so I guess those don't really count.) I don't know about the rest of you, but it kinda warms the cockles of my heart whenever I do. We're not alone out there!

59. WOWSER!
My daughter and I had a get-together with Scout friends today in the high-rent end of the township. I counted seven -- yes, seven -- B/C signs. Six literally next to each other. House, after house, after house...I defintely was out of my element, and was half expecting to have someone from the neighborhood come to ask me and my offensive vehicle to leave.

If I'd have known I'd be driving into Bushtown, I would have made even a further point for the proletariat by taking my husband's 1988 Chevy Nova.

60. It's only "Bushtown" because Bushies are marching door-to-door...
... with signs, free for the asking.

I can only imagine the script:

"Hello! Do you support our troops? Please show your support for the troops by placing this BUSH/CHENEY 2004 sign in your yard! It's free, and it shows your neighbors how much you support the troops!"

:eyes:

61. No. Not This Neighborhood
...it was solidly Bush in 2000, too. This is Bush's "base," and it seems that support is even stronger there this year. I'm surprised my friend didn't have a sign in her yard. She did last time. I'd like to see the precinct count for registered Dems in that area. Could probably get a canvassing walk done in five minutes flat.

To me it dramatically points out the class gap that's growing in this country. My husband drove through East Dayton (poor to lower middle class area) and Kerry signs abounded. I think second to the war, the disappearance of the middle class is what scares me most about a Bush second term.

It was nice, saw a LOT of cars with Kerry stickers on Ohio 315/I-270/US 33... of course, once I got back up into the rural areas, the shrub yard signs started popping up again... :puke:

the good guys!

Here in the dreaded "I-75" corridor it's about 50-50.

Keep counting and let us know how it's going, SuaveOne.

70. Seen a lot more Kerry than Bush in Akron
I probably have only seen 5 (at the most) Bush bumper stickers where I have seen Kerry stickers quite regularly.

Then went to Geneva Saturday... Lots of Kerry yard signs, absolutely no Bush yard signs that I saw. Seem to be lots of Kerry supporters along the Lake Erie shoreline in Eastern Ohio.

73. A million-dollar house in Warren Co. (area of Rts. 48 & 73)
has a yard sign that reads:

"Vote the Son-of-a-Bush OUT"

I was so happy when I saw that sign!!!

Also, on a trip from Dayton to Hillsboro, I saw an even amount of K-E and "you know who" yard signs.

Wilmington, in Clinton Co., even has a Kerry-Edwards Victory '04 store front.

Hooray for our side!!!

:D

74. Not many in eastern Ohio/ WV area. At the Italian festival in Wheeling
in July the Repugs had a roll of Bush* stickers about a foot in diameter they passed out thousands. The Democrats had no stickers only some badges that they were selling for $3. Last week at the Belmont county fair the same thing the Repugs had stickers out the wazoo. The Democrats had absolutely nothing for Kerry/Edwards. I have donated $80 to the Kerry campaign and have yet to receive anything but letters asking for more money.

75. What's up with your local Dem HQ?
I used to live in Youngstown and am thinking you're in East Liverpool or maybe Steubenville?

I'm in Dayton now, and we had to sell our buttons, bumper stickers, and yard signs, too -- hopefully the national and/or state campaign now has it together and we'll be getting a supply we can give away for free.

As I said, "hopefully."

76. Kinda Felt Intimidated Tonight....
...driving down 48 near Alex-Bell, car passes me full of 20-something guys. (I was stopping for the light.) I look up, and the guy in the passenger side was literally hanging out the window staring me down, as well as another dude in the backseat. They were NOT friendly. I can only guess it was my K/E sticker that got them going. I'm just glad they were making a turn and I was going through the intersection.

What is wrong with people?
