North Carolina wingnut judges to avoid on 11/7?
Hi all:

I just received a 2006 Nonpartisan Judicial Voter Guide in the mail this past weekend. What I really need, as someone relatively new to N. Raleigh, is a PARTISAN Judicial Voter Guide. Can anyone offer any input as to the right-wingers to avoid on election day?:

NC Supreme Court - Chief Justice
--Rusty Duke
--Sarah Parker

NC Supreme Court - Associate Justice
--Rachel Lea Hunter
--Mark D. Martin
--Patricia Timmons-Goodson
--Eric Levinson
--Ann Marie Calabra
--Robin Hudson

NC Court of Appeals
--Kris Bailey
--Robert C. Hunter
--Linda Stephens
--Donna Stroud

Any information would be appreciated! :-)

1. The Independent will come out with a voter guide the week
before the election - it will list their preferences, but include a bio of each candidate as well so you can be informed to make your own decision.

I generally, though not always, agree with them. I only wish it came out 2 weeks before, instead of one week.

12. Damn if you aren't right.
So much for the "non-partisan" in the title of the guide. Certainly made my research a lot easier, but they can't play by the rules, can they?

7. Durham People’s Alliance PAC Endorsements
Chief Justice, NC Supreme Court

Justice Sarah Parker .. Democrat .. Chief Justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court since February 1, 2006 ... a moderate voice in an increasingly conservative court .. http://www.chiefjusticesarahparker.com/

Associate Justice, NC Supreme Court

There are three separate races for associate justice seats. You may vote for one candidate in each race

.. incumbent Patricia Timmons-Goodson .. Democrat .. first black woman to sit on the North Carolina Supreme Court .. judicial experience, having been a District Court and Court of Appeals judge .. strong legal mind .. http://www.timmons-goodson.com/

.. Democrat Robin Hudson .. built a long track record as a champion of the rights of working people as an attorney in private practice .. progressive outlook will provide the Supreme Court with needed balance. http://www.robinhudson.org/

In the Martin seat race .. no endorsement .. incumbent, Republican Mark Martin, does not have a progressive record and his opponent, Rachel Lea Hunter, has an erratic political record ..

NC Court of Appeals

There are two separate races for Court of Appeals judge. You will be able to vote for one candidate in each race.

.. incumbent Democrat Bob Hunter .. is a moderate, thoughtful .. appellate judge with many years of service. If his Republican challenger were elected, it would cause the court to shift even further to the right. http://www.judgebobhunter.com/

.. incumbent Democrat Linda Stephens .. served the public well as a deputy commissioner of the Industrial Commission and then as its chairman. This body hears workers’ compensation claims and claims against the state .. http://www.judgelinda.org/

Personality change following return of brain tumor

Lefty blog, BlueNC.com, has finally decided to comment on the latest shenanigans of NC Supreme Court candidate Rachel Lea Hunter and Connie Mack Berry, Jr.

Apparently there is strong suspicion that Hunter is no longer in control of her campaign and has not been for quite some time.

Someone on BlueNC wrote:

Connie Mack Berry, Jr. has indeed posted on edcone.com and bluenc.com (on another thread) that Rachel Lea Hunter's brain tumor (that was operated on last year) has returned. It is rumored that due to her illness, she no longer has the facilities to deal with her campaign on a day-to-day basis.

It is very likely that Connie Mack Berry, Jr., for all practical purposes, IS Rachel Lea Hunter these days. Most certainly in recent months, Rachel Lea Hunter's personality has undergone a severe change that has caused her campaign to nose-dive.

Dean Smith Asks Candidate To Remove Endorsement From Web Site
POSTED: 10:35 pm EDT May 22, 2006
UPDATED: 10:35 pm EDT May 22, 2006

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Despite a message posted on her campaign Web site, former North Carolina basketball coach Dean Smith said Monday he has not endorsed lawyer Rachel Lea Hunter for the state Supreme Court. "I never knew her in my life," Smith said. "I assume I'll vote, but I don't know who I'll vote for."

More bad judgement

Hard to believe she posted this TV commercial.

Jerry Meek recommends withholding endorsement:

Rachel Hunter and Vernon Robinson
I've been off showing my editor around the Raleigh beat and working
on a weekend story for most of today. So I almost blew out of here
without a post today, but then an e-mail came my way from N.C. Democratic Party
Chairman Jerry Meek. The money lines:

Today, Rachel Lea Hunter compared Vernon Robinson to a slave in a mass email
and on her website. In response, North Carolina Democratic Party Chair Jerry Meek
made this statement:

“Vernon Robinson is an embarrassment to himself and to the many well-meaning people o
f both parties who hear the call to public service and run for office.
Between now and November, he will run his campaign of sleaze and I am confident
that voters will again reject him. However, today Rachel Lea Hunter crossed the line.
Her characterization of Robinson as a ‘slave’ was reprehensible and I call on
her to apologize. This racial epithet has no place in any political dialogue,
even directed towards someone as contemptible as Vernon Robinson.”

“Consequently, I am announcing today that I will recommend that the
State Democratic Party leadership withhold any endorsement in the
Supreme Court seat that Rachel Lea Hunter is seeking.

Oh no, she didn’t...did she? Well, yes she did.....

Tried to have her name listed as "Madame Justice" on the ballot although she's never been a judge:

State election officials rebuffed her attempt to get her nickname, "Madame Justice," on the ballot, saying it would mislead voters because she has never been a judge

Also the Bar Association has endorsed her opponent, who is an incumbent and who
really is a justice. (same link as above).

Connie Mack Berry was immediately taken into custody after being sentenced on theft-by-taking charges for stealing a 2-carat diamond from a Cartersville woman.

Mary D. Joseph testified that after her husband died she took Berry $2,000 worth of gold and silver coins last summer to raise money to pay medical bills. She also asked Berry to repair a broken prong on

Marietta gold dealer Connie Mack Berry Jr. has been indicted on theft charges by a Cobb County grand jury.

The indictment says Berry accepted $90,000 from a Marietta couple who ordered gold coins and gold and silver bars but that Berry only delivered about $19,000 worth of merchandise.

The charge grew out of an earlier criminal warrant taken out by Davis Austin Sauls. The warrant alleged that Berry did not deliver the "agreed-upon purchased materials, nor has he returned
