Tea Party candidate challenges Congressman Frelinghuysen

SOMERVILLE — The 11th Congressional District, which starts in Raritan Borough and extends northward to Morris, Sussex and Passaic counties, is so reliably Republican, that the more important election of the year is the GOP primary on June 8.

Whoever wins the GOP nomination in the primary is an overwhelming favorite to win a two-year seat in the House of Representatives in the November general election.

Rodney Frelinghuysen, whose family has roots in the district dating to pre-Revolutionary War times, has been representing the district since 1994. He is the sixth member of the Frelinghuysen family to represent Central Jersey in Congress since the 1700s.

Richard Luzzi, an attorney in Rockaway, has taken a leave of absence as president of the Morristown Tea Party to run against Frelinghuysen for the nomination. He joined the Tea Party movement when he became unhappy with both major political parties and professional politicians.
