Questions for the new Republican Party of Minnesota

by

Bill Habedank

May 12, 2010

With the Minnesota Republicans having made their choice of Tom Emmer (a Tea Party supporter) as their candidate for governor, this shows just where the Republicans want to lead us. There should be little question that if Tom Emmer is elected governor and if the new Republican Party takes over Congress, we will see a continued push for smaller government.

Since the days of Ronald Reagan, we have seen a trend towards smaller regulatory government (which is purported to be cost-saving) but with massive increases in military expenditures. The military and war spending now accounts for about 53 cents of every tax dollar of which over half is additional federal debt. This has led us down the path to unending war and foreign occupations and disastrous calamities of our financial and environmental worlds. With Tea Party politics in play, we will have a continuation of this trend.

What is going to replace government which is a necessity of a well organized society. With little or no regulatory government will we continue to see corruption on Wall Street? Will we see more coal miners die in unsafe mines? Will we see gargantuan oil companies refuse to spend extra money to prevent catastrophic environmental disasters? Will we see charities fail to rise up to meet the needs of the growing population of the poor? Will our children's education continue to be inadequate to prevent them from joining the list of the poor? Will we fail to begin a smooth transition to cleaner, more efficient energy sources? The answer to all (of this incomplete list) is sadly yes. I try very hard to put my trust into thinking that less government could and would remedy these things but I have to rely on past experience and that tells me it would not.

Therefore I ask the Tea Partiers, and now the new Republican Party of Minnesota, just how is your policy of NO going to improve America? What are you going to do to help prevent the disasters mentioned above from happening again and again? How are you going to help prevent the Bernie Madoff's of the world from exploiting us? How are you going to help prevent the BP's and Exxon's of the world from destroying people and whole ecosystems? If you have a new plan I would like to hear what it is. I pray that you do have a plan that would work but why does it remain in hiding? Please let us know very soon because time is running out. The world too awaits (and I fear dreads) to see what a new Republican government will look like and how it will act. They might just say “No mas”.
