Hear that cracking sound? Well, that's hell freezing over because our own local republican whore Sarah Janacek supports feminism! At least that's what it sounds like in this op ed piece in today's Strib:
Twenty-two years ago, then-Secretary of State Joan Growe (DFL) was the first woman to run for a major-league Minnesota statewide office against then-U.S. Sen. Rudy Boschwitz (R). At that time, some women, including many Republicans, cringed when Boschwitz routinely called Joan "Mrs. Growe" in debates.
Never mind that at the time, Growe was divorced. To some people (including men), Boschwitz addressing her as "Mrs." seemed to be code for "Hey, lady, your marriage failed but you still belong at home -- and, by the way, what do you know about foreign affairs?"
Ten years later, then-House Majority Leader Ann Wynia (DFL) ran against then-U.S. Rep. Rod Grams (R) for the open U.S. Senate seat created by Republican Dave Durenberger's retirement. The Star Tribune reported that as a Senate candidate, Wynia was perceived as "boring" and "not charismatic": "She neither causes DFLers' hearts to palpitate, nor raises Independent-Republicans' blood pressure."
Hmmm. Did male opponent Grams exude excitement and charisma and cause heart palpitations and raise blood pressure? Not exactly.
In 2006, we've come a long way, baby, from inexperienced female and dull female. Now we have "ambitious female."
In a letter from AFSCME Local 2938 president James Appleby to the union's state board asking the group not to endorse Hennepin County Attorney and likely DFL U.S. Senate candidate Amy Klobuchar, Appleby wrote, "Qualified personnel from her own and other public offices have been rejected because her priority has been to choose candidates who support her ambitions."
That's shocking, simply shocking. Think about Gov. Tim Pawlenty, Sen. Norm Coleman or Klobuchar's likely GOP opponent, U.S. Rep. Mark Kennedy. Certainly they haven't committed the supposed sin of hiring people who support their ambitions.
So much for 40 years of feminism. Women not only have to bring home the bacon and fry it up in a pan, we also have to look as if we just walked off the set of "Desperate Housewives" while standing over the stove.
And for women running for U.S. Senate, there's a new rule: Don't be too ambitious.http://www.startribune.com/562/story/264081.html------------------------------------
Excuse me while my head spins. Is this the same Janacek who claimed the monitors were prompting people to boo Trent Lott during the Wellstone memorial? The same woman who, frankly, has benefited from feminism yet supports a party that wants to see all women back in the 50s? Who knew?
