This sucks. Dillon and Bernero both have deal breakers
Dillon is opposed to stem-cell research and is basically a Republican.

Bernero says a lot of good things, but is against the much-needed DRIC project.

I hate these choices.

:-(

1. Really?
Opposed to stem-cell research, anti-union, anti-choice, basically Republican....

contrasted with a business deal you don't like.

This is a choice?

2. The DRIC is an essential economic development issue
The DRIC, combined with the ongoing Aerotropolis project in western Wayne County, could be the next big engine of economic growth in the SE Michigan region -- and hence, for all of Michigan.

And, oh yes, Matty Maroun -- the developer who says he wants to build a new bridge -- can't get the permits to do what he claims to want to do(it's unclear how hard he is actually trying) and has been proven to be a liar and a cheat.

We have a governor now who is anti-choice. And has anybody noticed? No. That's because the governor has no real influence over the availability of abortions in the state. On the other hand, a governor has a lot of power to stall or kill off projects like the DRIC.

My fear is that Bernero's opposition would end up killing the DRIC and leave us waiting eons for Matty Maroun (the proven liar) to build the bridge he claims he wants to build. We cannot afford that. We need a second crossing ASAP.

3. It is disappointing
Edited on Wed Jul-28-10 10:57 AM by blue_onyx
I'm also disappointed in Bernero's lack of support for taxing services and a graduated income tax. I'm not excited about either candidate but I'll be voting for Bernero. I find Dillon's anti-choice position more concerning.

4. I don't like Dillion, but...
While I might still vote for Virg, I don't think I'll vote based on anybody's position on abortion. Granholm is anti-choice, and that has not made a real difference. That's not an issue a governot really has a lot of control over.

I care mainly about economic development, job creation and urban issues.

5. Actually, Granholm is pro-choice
The governor does have a role regarding abortion. For example, Granholm has vetoed a "partial birth abortion" ban several times. With Dillon as governor, it would have passed. Dillon's position on abortion is what leads him to oppose stem-cell research. I do find it an important issue.

6. I have it on good authority...
Edited on Wed Jul-28-10 12:58 PM by LuckyTheDog
...that Granholm personally describes herself as "pro-life." But, luckily, she decided to govern in a way consistent with Roe v. Wade. (She has a "nuanced" position.) But some folks were really worried about how Granholm rule on Roe v. Wade if she was on the Supreme Court and the issue came before her. I heard those concerns from people who know Granholm personally.

Maybe the folks I talked to are all wet. But they are in a position to know.

I agree that stem-cell research is an important issue. But in terms of economic impact on the state, it's a sideshow compared to DRIC.

7. She is pro-choice and has governed as so.
She has said she is against abortion...meaning she would not have one. But she has also stated that it's a decision left to a woman and her doctor. I'm sure many pro-choice people would never have an abortion them self. What really matters is if a person thinks they have the right to enforce their belief on others ("pro-life"). Granholm has governed as a pro-choice governor. I'll belief her actions and statements more than the rumors of people you've talked to. As for Roe v. Wade...I feel very confident that Granholm would uphold it if she were nominated to the Supreme Court.

DRIC is important. I would be nice if it passed this year....then it wouldn't matter if the next governor supported it or not.

8. Maybe I am splitting hairs re: Granholm and abortion
I voted for her twice and I am not sorry I did.

I totally agree with you about the DRIC. I'd like to make it a moot point.
