What's At Stake:

The Facts on Minimum Wage Workers in America

Putting Our Stagnant Minimum Wage Into Perspective
A worker making minimum wage at a full-time job earns $10,700 a year,
falling $5,000 below the poverty line for a family of three.
(Economic Policy Institute, March 2005)

A single parent working full-time at the current minimum wage earns enough to cover
only 42 percent of the cost of raising two children.
(Children’s Defense Fund, July 2004)

If our minimum wage kept pace with bosses’ pay since 1990, it would be $23.03 an hour.
(New York Times, 9/3/05)

Who Would Benefit From a Minimum Wage Increase?
7.3 million workers in America would benefit from a minimum wage increase.
(Economic Policy Institute, March 2005)

Nearly one third of those workers are single mothers.
(Center for American Progress, March 2006)

9.7 million children live in households which would benefit from a minimum wage increase
(Children’s Defense Fund, July 2004)

States Realize Raising the Minimum Wage Benefits Our Economy
Since 1997, 18 states and the District of Columbia have raised their minimum wage
above the federal level. Following this trend, fifteen more states are considering
ballot or legislative measures to raise the minimum wage in 2006.
(Center for American Progress, March 2006)

11 million jobs were added to the economy in the four years
after the last minimum wage increase.
(Center for American Progress, June 2005)

Fair Minimum Wage Act
The Fair Minimum Wage Act will raise the federal minimum wage to $7.20 over two years.
