Maine soldier killed in Iraq

By Portland Press Herald Staff Report March 24, 2008 02:58 PM

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Department of Defense today announced the death of a Maine soldier in Iraq.

Army Pvt. Tyler J. Smith, 22, of Bethel died Friday at Forward Operating Base Falcon near Baghdad of wounds sustained when the base received indirect fire, according to a written statement from the Department of Defense.

The Army would not provide details of the battle, but "indirect fire" typically indicates a mortar or artillery attack, an Army spokesman said.

Smith was a combat engineer assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, based at Fort Stewart, Ga. He joined the Army in late 2005 and was assigned to Ft. Stewart in April of 2006.

His unit was sent to Iraq in November and is scheduled to return in February of 2009.

1. I have a daughter that's 20 and a son that's 19.
I cannot imagine the grief his parents are going through. Just stop the senseless carnage, Bush....or, send your daughters for a 4-5 tours.

4. Military service
It would be a good idea, I think, if the sons and daughters and nephews and nieces and all the military age members of the President's and Vice President's families -- and maybe those of Cabinet members as well -- were required to serve in the combat zones of any war their fathers and mothers start.
